Matching Grants Bring Together Binc and Community to Create a Safety Net

Carl is the sole income earner in their two-person household. Years ago, they were diagnosed with a rare disease that required surgery. The lengthy recovery and bills from that first surgery diminished their personal financial safety net. Recently they were notified they would have to have a similar surgery . . . again. That's when they reached out to Binc.

In some cases, a single Binc grant won't bring the bookseller back to where they were before the emergency. That's when we suggest they also apply for a matching grant. Binc was able to help with an emergency financial assistance grant, and a second grant matching the $2,000 raised by Carl's community. These two grants together, along with community support, have helped Carl know their rent will be paid during their recovery.

Eight matching grants have so far been awarded in 2021 totaling $13,137. These grants are an important but under-utilized tool for getting a household through a financial emergency. If you have a need that may qualify for a Matching Grant, or know a bookstore or comic shop owner or employee who might be eligible, get in touch with Binc. Email help@bincfoundation.org or call 866-733-9064 today.

*Confidentiality is a core component of any assistance Binc provides, so the name of this bookstore owner has been changed. Some events may have been compressed and details might be included from another story to protect the confidentiality and privacy of all those who receive assistance from Binc.
“Not only did Binc step in to help us when both of us needed major surgeries in the same awful year, they sent us a book with very clear instructions to help us minimize our health expenses and manage our health debts, and they kept in contact throughout our troubles and beyond.

I feel really good about the monthly donations I now make to this foundation: someone else will get not only the financial assistance, but the compassionate, non-judgmental, truly thoughtful support that we received.”
