 Dear Colleagues,
As another academic year draws to a close, I would like to take the time to acknowledge the efforts of our office and faculty for yet again another productive and successful year. We undertook many new initiatives, renewed support for existing ones, and upheld our clinical and academic leadership on the world stage. We continued with our virtual annual social gatherings including: Breakfasts with the Chair, a PGY1-2 research town hall, global surgery symposium, EDI symposia, the biennial book club, a career night for medical students interested in surgery, Gallie Day and the Gordon Murray Lecture.
Dean Trevor Young announced a historic gift to the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) at the University of Toronto (UofT) from James and Louise Temerty, and the Temerty Foundation with an unprecedented $250M donation.
Homer Tien (General Surgery, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, President and CEO of ORNGE) led Operation Remote Immunity which enabled faculty in the Department of Surgery to administer vaccinations in 31 remote Indigenous communities in a culturally respectful partnership between ORNGE and Nishnawbe Aski Nations, including clinic set-up and translation services.
The year 2021 marked the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto. Sir Frederick Banting began his training in surgery at Sick Kids Hospital, and a video commemorating this discovery and Banting’s role as a surgeon can be found at https://surgery.utoronto.ca/news/video-sir-frederick-banting-surgeon-scientist-extraordinaire
The Department of Surgery was ranked 4th in the world by the US News and World Report for the second year in a row.
All Surgical Residency Programs and Surgical Foundations underwent accreditation by the Royal College of Physicians and all Programs in Surgery received Full Accreditation, with a recommended next accreditation visit and external review in 2028.
In February 2021, the Department of Surgery was reviewed by Dr. Susan Reid, McMaster University; and Dr. Nita Ahuja, Yale University.
University Rounds and guest lectures continue to play a major role in the Department in knowledge dissemination and networking. Our invited speakers this year included: Dr. Joanna Chikwe, Bigelow Lecturer; Dr. Dana A. Telem, Robin McLeod Lecturer; Dr. Steven Scherer, Ben Alman Research and Science Lecturer; Dr. Lindsey Fitzharris, Kergin Lecturer; Dr. Marcie Bowers, Balfour Lecturer; and Dr. Joseph Sakran, Tile Lecturer. Gallie Day was once again a resounding success with Dr. James Shapiro, The University of Alberta speaking on “Cell Transplantation for Diabetes 100 Years on from Insulin – The Sweetest Solution for Elimination of this Disease”. Our sixth Global Surgery Symposium was based on “The Future of Virtual Learning in Global Surgery: Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and Telesimulation”. The inaugural Equity, Diversion and Inclusion lecture, as organized by Laura Snell and Najib Saffiedine, took place with Dr Frances Henry, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, speaking on “White privilege and unconscious bias”.
Major Faculty achievements included
Najma Ahmed is the recipient of the CPSO Council Award for her advocacy work with gun control and protection. Veronica Wadey was elected to serve on UofT Governing Council representing all Teaching Staff holding appointments in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine including clinical faculty. Gelareh Zadeh has been named as one of the 2021 Top 25 Women of Influence. Danielle Bentley is the recipient of a 2020-2021 University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award. Robin McLeod completed her term as President of the American Surgical Association and gave her Presidential Address on the topic of "Greening the Operating Room" on Friday, April 16, 2021. Mark Bernstein is the recipient of this year’s Temerty Medicine Humanitarian award for his efforts in Global Neurosurgery. Natalie Coburn and Kazuhiro Yasufuku were elected to Fellowship within the American Surgical Association in 2020. Katherine Howe was the 2020 Wylie Scholar recipient for her stroke research - only the third Canadian to receive this prestigious award.
I would also like to underscore several notable accomplishments of our faculty this year. Earl Bogoch has recently been named as the holder of the Brookfield Chair in Fracture Prevention; Tulin Cil has been appointed to the Gattuso Chair in Breast Surgical Oncology at University Health Network; Leodante (Leo) da Costa has been appointed as the inaugural Medical Director of the Centre for Neurovascular Intervention at Sunnybrook; Elisa Greco has been selected as UofT Vascular Surgery Residency Program Director; Mohit Kapoor has been appointed as the inaugural Tony and Shari Fell Platinum Chair in Arthritis Research; John Marshall has recently been named as the holder of an Endowed Chair in Trauma Research; Carmine Simone assumed the role of Interim Vice President, Clinical Programs, Michael Garron Hospital; Rajiv Singal became Surgeon-in-Chief and Co-Medical Director for the Surgery Health Service at Michael Garron Hospital; Jory Simpson accepted the position of Division Head for General Surgery at Unity Health, SMH, was appointed as Director of MD Program, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto and the Rae Early Career Professorship in Cancer Surgical Care; Mojgan Hodaie was appointed as Director Postgraduate Medical Education, Department of Surgery and the Greg Wilkins - Barrick Chair in International Surgery; Najma Ahmed has been appointed as Surgeon-in-Chief of Unity Health, St. Michael's Hospital; Nir Lipsman has been announced as the new residency program director for neurosurgery at the University of Toronto; Gideon Cohen has been appointed to the Dr. Bernard S. Goldman Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery; Maral Ouzounian has been appointed as the Antonio and Helga De Gasperis Chair in Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research at University Health Network; James Drake and Michael Jewett were named as Members of the Order of Canada; Girish Kulkarni has been appointed as Head, Division of Surgical Oncology, Sprott Department of Surgery, University Health Network; Geoff Fernie became a member of the Order of Ontario; Andrew Howard was appointed to Head, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children; Mary-Anne Aarts has been appointed as the new Chief of the Department of Surgery and co-Medical Director, Peri-operative Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital; Kazu Yasufuku was appointed as the Division Head of Thoracic Surgery at University Health Network and Chair of the Division of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.
In 2020-2021 the Department of Surgery had an incredible year with $7.1M in philanthropic support raised. I extend a sincere thanks to our faculty and alumni for their continued support, and especially our leadership across the Department who give generously and dedicate a genuine effort toward building philanthropic relationships to advance excellence in research and education. Here are some of the highlights over the last year.
The Department received $2M in support of our Surgeon Scientist Training Program as part of the Temerty Foundation’s investment in the Faculty of Medicine. Two new Surgeon Scientist Trainee Awards were also established through generous gifts from Dr. Wally Peters and Julie Di Lorenzo.
The Department was also a recipient of a generous $500K gift from Dr. Neville Poy and The Honourable Dr. Vivienne Poy in support of senior resident education in aesthetic plastic surgery. Dr. Nancy McKee and her family also established a new fund with a $200K gift to support education and research in reconstructive surgery.
Additional highlights include gifts from Dr. Robin Richards in support of physician wellness and from Mark Daniels in support of research into surgical treatments of complex vascular conditions. Finally, we also continue to see significant support from our industry partners towards our educational programming and clinical and research fellowships across the Divisions.
This past year a Department of Surgery alumni newsletter was launched and is receiving above industry standard open rates (44.7%). Also for the first time, judges from the alumni were involved in Gallie Day.
Research funding continues to rise each year, and this year reached an all time high of $102,655,553.
Tess Weber retired at the end of April 2021 after 40 years with the University of Toronto.
Sadly, we lost some giants in the Department, and we extend our condolences to the family and friends of Drs. Robert Filler (Paediatric General Surgery, July 2, 2020); Neil Watters (General Surgery, September 22, 2020); Al Harrison (General Surgery, October 2020); William “Bill” Spence, (General Surgery, February 22, 2021); Lucas Murnaghan (Orthopaedic Surgeon, March 23, 2021); and Dan Stojimirovic (Orthopaedic Divisional Administrator, April 11, 2021).
As always, I am truly honoured to be leading such a capable and accomplished group of women and men across all levels of training, and at all levels of faculty appointments. While no one can predict the future, it is a safe bet, in my opinion, that the Department of Surgery will continue to reach new milestones and landmarks that can only be dreamed of at this time. Please enjoy the summer with your family and friends, and I hope to see you all virtually at my Annual Address, Friday, September 11th!
