The Connections You Make

As I was watching the Eno Center for Transportation's “Webinar: Women at the Helm”, I immediately began to recall all the twists and turns and, at times, what I believed to be sheer serendipity that moved me from career choice to career choice. As I listened to the distinguished panel of executive women speak about how they made the transition to their leadership roles, I began thinking about my journey, from my time in college to my current position and how I was able to move into ever increasing roles of responsibility, not by filling out job applications, but by my skills and recommendations of my peers. In what Oprah calls an ‘aha moment’, I recognized professional relationships, not just resumes, play a powerful role in a growing career.

Upon reflection, I realized that my first career position at a small government research and development company was hatched thanks to relationships that I developed working part-time performing administrative support functions during my last semester in college. I periodically engaged in small talk with the CEO of the company until one day he called me into his office. He knew I was graduating at the end of the semester, and the staff liked my work ethic and had spoken to him about my capabilities. The CEO offered me a full-time database engineering position to begin upon graduation. So, it began.

Jill will lead Marine Tiger’s continued growth through developing relationships with primes and clients and providing strategic direction to the firm. She brings 34 years of industry experience in transportation, specializing in public involvement and has served as Public Involvement Manager for a broad range of PennDOT projects. Jill is active in the Philadelphia chapters of WTS and COMTO and a member of ACEC PA.

Marine Tiger is proud to be a member of the NYSTEC team that has been selected to provide business consulting services to the Office of Traffic Safety and Mobility (OTSM), a division of the New York State Department of Transportation. Building on its experience in developing strategic plans for transportation agencies, Marine Tiger is working with OTSM to achieve clarity on its mission and goals, to better align its allocation of resources to meet those goals, and to develop a business case for addressing functional and staffing gaps. Project tasks include stakeholder interviews and workshops, the development of a gap analysis between the current and desired state, and the design of a strategic framework for analyzing alternative solutions.
