Policy Alert:
Congress & White House Reach Infrastructure Deal

Today the White House and a bi-partisan group of senators have reached a deal for an infrastructure package of about $1.2 trillion. The outline of the package has been posted today on the White House website here.

Lawmakers now must put together details and bring the package together. Fortunately for energy and grid related items, today was also a hearing of the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee where Chair Manchin brought forward a package of energy and grid-related items that invest in a number of aspects of the electric system. The draft package is posted here.

Grid Forward, our members and partners are actively engaging Congressional offices to encourage them to keep these aspects in final legislation and funded to meet the needs of the industry.

In the President's package, Grid Forward is excited to see funding for electric grid infrastructure ($73 billion), resiliency ($47 billion) and other energy and grid related areas.

In the Manchin package, Grid Forward was pleased to see funding for grid modernization, grid resiliency, wildfire mitigation, cyber security and other areas that were presented by Senators Cantwell, Wyden and others. Most of those items were included in Title I of the draft energy infrastructure package.

"We are extremely pleased to see that Congress recognizes how critical investments in the backbone of our electric system truly are by proposing funding important for grid modernization areas. The increased capabilities of the electric grid will help ensure that the lifeblood of our economies and communities — which we rely on for consistent and affordable power to run our ever more connected and digital lives and businesses — remains robust," said Bryce Yonker, Executive Director of Grid Forward.

"This is not, nor should it be, a partisan or political topic. Overdue investment in a modern grid infrastructure creates jobs, ensures reliable electric service in a time of increasingly disruptive events, and helps accommodate an effective energy transition with all the new and dynamic assets coming onto the grid."

Grid Forward and a number of member organizations and partners plan to continue to engage with key congressional offices on the details of the mark up of the legislation. If you have any questions or comments on the package or process please contact Bryce Yonker
