- Oceania team to wear jersey designed by local indigenous artist
When the Oceania team runs out for this weekend’s PacificAus Sports Oceania Sevens, they will proudly be wearing a new jersey designed by local indigenous artist, Luke Duffy.
The Kalkadoon Waanyi Aboriginal artist was approached by Oceania Rugby for use of his design.
“When I answered the phone call, my phone was a bit scratchy and I thought it was just a local rugby union team, and I’m like, ‘That’s cool,’” Mr Duffy said.
“When they mentioned Oceania, I was like, ‘Woah, Woah. This is it.’ I was really surprised and happy to run with it.”
Duffy said the inspiration for his design came from the pathways and connections that Indigenous Australian’s have forged.
“The design represents Australia's first nation peoples and their pathways paved before us. These pathways are our connection to creating better outcomes and opportunities through health, education and employment. The pathway will never break as long as we work together hand in hand ensuring a much safer, stronger and brighter future for our community and nation.”
Stu Dunbar, captain of the men’s Oceania team, said he was happy to know the story behind the jersey when it was revealed at Wednesday night’s official welcome function.
“It’s always important to know a bit about your jersey and why you’re playing for your jersey cause when you’re out there you literally are playing with blood sweat and tears.”
Duffy, originally from Mount Isa, moved to Townsville 16 years ago and currently works part-time producing digital art for a variety of clients.
He said his style revolves around the use of colour, which he said is evident in the Oceania design.
“Even though I’m from the desert area, I love using colours because colours bring out the brightness, colours turn heads.”
When asked to describe the final product, Duffy only had one word to say. “Deadly.”
A limited number of the Oceania jerseys will be available for purchase this weekend at the Oceania Sevens.
Competition kick-offs today at 2pm AEST with Australia against Fiji, and will continue through to Sunday, June 27.
Tickets are still available through ticketmaster.com.au or by contacting Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
