The Mastery School of Hawken

June 18, 2021

Welcome to the Mastery School! We hope your summers are off to a good start.

Below, you’ll find a lot of the details about work for the summer. You’ll also see an in-depth survey that will help us get to know you better, which will inform how we set up your Wayfinding partnership and where you’re placed for your year 1 Macros. There are no wrong answers, so don’t overthink it and please just speak your truth.

We’re looking forward to getting to know all of you when school begins in August. In the meantime, we hope you can recharge and enjoy your summers.

Thank you,

Wayfinding Survey

We look forward to getting to you know and your interests more this summer as we prepare to have you on campus in August. Please take the time to complete this Wayfinding survey by no later than the end of the day on Sunday, July 11. There are many questions, so please plan to set aside time to complete it as Google does not let you save your progress as you go.

Summer Reading

Hello Mastery School students!

We have a wonderful selection of texts for your summer reads this year.  When we come together on campus in August, we’ll get into book groups and discuss the texts.  So pick one that looks interesting to you and finish it before school starts.  Taking notes is a great way to keep your memory of the book fresh when you go to discuss it.

You can feel free to read two, if you’d like, but you don’t have to.  You’re allowed to read three if you really want to.  You can read four, if you’re so moved.  Five is okay, just so long as you’re into them.  Six is highly recommended if you’re a bibliophile.  Seven books is fine, so long as your parents or guardians approve.  And eight is fantastic, but not required.  We do, however, draw the line at nine.  Do not read nine books from this list.

If you want to learn a little more about these books, check out the video descriptions via our Flipgrid here (password: FoundingClass).

Summer of 2021 Reading List:
Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Originals by Adam Grant
Every Tool’s a Hammer by Adam Savage
All Boys Aren’t Blue
by George M. Johnson
The Vanishing Half
by Brit Bennett
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Join Us at YAY Saturdays!

Stop by UCI's YAY Saturdays in Wade Oval this week and next to say hi! The festivities take place between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. We are excited to be back out in the world, connecting with families and fellow members of our University Circle neighborhood.

Community Partnerships Update

Rasa Drane is spearheading connections across Cleveland as she begins her new role as Director of Admission & Community Partnerships. While the academic year is winding down, the Community Partnerships Office is ramping up!  As our community is increasing in size and pandemic restrictions are easing in Ohio, we are excited to cultivate even more academic partnerships and mentorship opportunities for our students. Here are ways you can support:
  • We are confident that you have some amazing people in your network that would make great partners and mentors for our school. Help us engage great people by adding their contact info to our Prospective Partners Form. If you would like to represent your organization, please feel free to include yourself.  These contacts will be added to our listserv.
  • Send us information for events happening around the city.  We might be able to make an appearance!
 Thank you for your support!
