BHS PARENTS: JOIN THE SUMMER READING

Every summer BHS students engage in a common summer reading experience. This summer, all faculty will join the students in reading,  Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson.  The book is about the many kinds of unfairness n the American criminal legal system and a story of  hope and resilience.  The common reading of this book will serve multiple purposes next year as justice and equity will be part of our work as a larger BHS community next.

The Summer Reading Planning Team invites parents and caretakers to join in our summer reading of Just Mercy.  We would love to have you read the book and/or watch the film.  For information on watching the film or accessing the book, go here.  The PTO will be co-hosting a book-club style conversations with other parents and caretakers this summer. If you are interested in joining a book discussion group, please go here. Thank-you for supporting this important  BHS initiative.

IDEAS AND TIPS FOR A FUN SAFE SUMMER

DON’T STRESS OVER SUMMER!
Summer’s change in routine and lack of structure can be a recipe for risky business, with fallout from the pandemic this year an added complication. While we gleefully stretch our limits as COVID restrictions relax, let’s commit to keeping our keeping adolescents safe this summer. B-PEN offers these ideas.

Like or follow Brookline Parent Education Network on Facebook for the latest news on helpful information. If you need advice over the summer, don’t hesitate to reach out to Brookline’s Prevention/Intervention team – Mary Minott (Mary_Minott@psbma.org and Abby Dean (Gabrielle_Dean@psbma.org)

MA FARM TO SCHOOL INITITIATIVE AT BHS

A team from the Brookline Public Schools has been selected to participate in the 2021-2022 Massachusetts Farm to School Institute. With support from this program, the team will  develop a Farm to School initiative at BHS and Pierce, with  the aim of developing a system-wide program later.  Special thanks to principals Lesley Ryan Miller and Anthony Meyer for supporting our application.

The Brookline Farm to School team includes Christi Electris (Pierce parent, Pierce Site Council member & Town Meeting Member), Roger Grande (BHS Social Studies), Tim Hintz (Pierce Guidance Counselor), Sasha Palmer (Food Services Director) and Brit Stevens (Career and Technology Curriculum Coordinator). We would also like to welcome a sixth team member from a school administration or  School Committee.  Please reach out to us if you would like to be more deeply involved.

They will develop a program to promote sustainability and locally grown food in our cafeterias and the BHS restaurant.  We aim to create programming that narrows the opportunities gap in outdoor education and integrates equity and cultural/racial identity with our food services.  Further we aim to work with staff to develop curriculum and community connections, such  as the Brookline Food Pantry and to cultivate opportunities for student leadership.

READ GREENZINE!

Check out the inaugural issue of GreenZine Brookline: Where Sustainability Is A School Issue. This new online publication features writing and illustrations from our youngest to oldest students about the environment, outdoor education and climate change. This issue includes BHS writers on the intersection of climate change and structural racism and more. Brookline school teachers, parents, and students have worked together on this new initiative.

Any student (or staff member) may submit a piece. We will solicit submissions for the second issue next year. To learn more,  email us at: greenzinebrookline@gmail.com.
