Dedication Program and Marker Honor Pembina Suffragist
PEMBINA, N.D. – A free public program dedicating a marker honoring attorney Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin (Métis/Turtle Mountain Chippewa) will be held on Thursday, July 8, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Pembina State Museum. Located on the grounds of the museum, the marker is part of the National Votes for Women Trail, recognizing Baldwin as an advocate for woman suffrage.
Speakers include Donna Brown, Turtle Mountain Community College president; Patrick Weir, State Historical Board president; Bill Peterson, State Historical Society of North Dakota director; Jeff Blanchard, Pembina State Museum site supervisor; and Susan Wefald, North Dakota coordinator of the National Votes for Women Trail.
Born in Pembina, Bottineau Baldwin (1863-1952) embraced the traditions of her heritage and of the suffrage movement. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Bottineau Baldwin to a position in Education Division of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. As an attorney, she became nationally known as a spokesperson for modern Native American women, testifying in front of Congress, and meeting with President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. She also marched in the Woman Suffrage Procession, the first woman suffragist parade in Washington, D.C.
The Pembina dedication is part of North Dakota’s “Celebrating 100 Years of Votes for Women 1920-2020” and a component of the National Votes for Women Trail across the country funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation of New York. Four additional markers have been placed in Grand Forks, Fargo, Valley City, and Beach.
Pembina State Museum is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
