Hello from The Founder

I don't know about you, but I can hardly believe we are already over halfway through the year!  There are still a lot of things happening around Covid, with lockdowns and of course the important messaging around immunisations

For those in lockdown or with restrictions, it could be a really good time to try and abstain from alcohol. As we head into #GoDrythisJuly - moderating your alcohol consumption or even going without it completely can have an enormous impact on your health. You will see noticeable benefits in your sleep, a lift in your mood, as well as a reduction in calories!  Of course you will also be “giving” as its a fundraiser for improving the care and wellbeing of those with cancer.

I also want to give you a #HeadsUpOnDiabetes for National Diabetes Week (12th -18th July) which focuses on the mental and emotional impact of those with diabetes. You might not know, but over 1.8 million Australians have diabetes and this is increasingly a risk factor for women.

Finally, a thought provoking article to share from our wonderful collaborators at Women’s Agenda, which shows some latest research indicating that having a female cardiologist may well improve your heart health!

Until next month, enjoy this bulletin and take care.

Best wishes

Linda

#GoDryThisJuly

Did you know that more women drink alcohol in order to relax and wind down in the evening and the absorption of alcohol can often be different for women - such as being quicker (due to absorption and body weight etc). There are many good reasons to think about significantly drinking less alcohol, or even trying to go without.

In the lead up to July why don’t you think about it? … Dry July is encouraging everyone to abstain from alcohol for the month and you will definitely notice things such as improved/ deeper sleep, plus for those who count the calories there can also weight loss and of course for all of us - no hangovers!

Does having a female cardiologist make a difference?

Recent research has shown that gender does matter and can influence decisions made in health care. So if you are a woman, a study has shown that having a female cardiologist may well improve your heart health.

The research, published in the Journal of The American College of Cardiology, found that women Cardiologists may be able to understand the subtle cues that (a female patient) gives, and thus be able to provide better care. You can read the full article here.

Also, in response to our own research and our community asking us for recommendations for a female cardiologist, we created a 'find a female cardiologist' resource on our website. You can find it here: Find a female cardiologist.

More women are being diagnosed with Diabetes, and this of course increases your risk of heart disease. In support of National Diabetes Week ( July 12-18) the focus this year is on the daily burden of living with diabetes. Diabetes Australia is focusing on the mental and emotional health impact of living with diabetes, read a brief summary of it on our website here with more details for you to follow up, or head to Diabetes Australia.

Why do we feel good after exercising

It is now well established that there are enormous benefits to exercising, some of which can have a number of effects on your whole body and can be long lasting for your heart health. It can be motivating to know how & why. Exercise helps release endorphins and other brain chemicals that trigger a positive feeling in the body. It does not mean that you have to be weight lifting but a good walk needs to get your heart rate up a little!
