Dear Member

Welcome to our August Newsletter!

Here in Wales we are now in level 0 and many restrictions have been lifted but all premises open to the public still need to have a risk assessment in place to protect volunteers and visitors.  So being able to restart face to face meetings depends on the size of the venue as social distancing measures etc are still legal requirements. We are also continuing to review when we can reopen the Resource Centre at Aberkenfig.

Our September Journal has now been posted out to all members and uploaded to the website and with it we have included a questionnaire which we ask members to complete as part of our Review of the current purpose and use of our Resource Centre.   (See links below)

Our ONLINE TALKS PROGRAMME continues until at least the New Year although due to the response we have had from non-local members we hope to continue meetings online even when face to face meetings have restarted.  See post below about creating a new 'Online Events Team' to organise such events.

NEW    Glamorgan Wales, Workhouse Registers 1850-1920 - Ancestry   NEW
Uploaded on 23 August these include a wealth of information not just related to the Workhouse as the collection comprises a series of documents listing both outdoor and indoor relief given to paupers, information about children admitted to the industrial schools together with correspondence received from relatives and former inmates asking for information.  These latter requests can provide information about inmates where their names have changed.
Organised by Poor Law Union the Glamorgan Workhouse collection also includes printed lists of paupers receiving outdoor relief from the Poor Law Unions in the east of the County in Cardiff, Merthyr Tydil, Bridgend and Pontypridd.    Swansea area records were uploaded a while ago - see links below.
A useful finding aid for further records as they provide a point in time when a pauper received relief.
They also offer a window into conditions in South Wales during the Victorian period and the early years of the 20th century and illustrate how relief was provided before the advent of the Welfare State.  They are a fascinating series of records - have a browse!!  The Swansea Collection also includes Punishment Books.

In their Own Write Project

Letters from the Poor 1834-1900
Two useful webinars recently described the 'In their Own Write Project'  about paupers writing to the Central Poor Law Commission complaining about various issues relating to their relief/workhouse conditions etc - 'In their Own Write Blog' and Project is recording the voices of about 1000 of these 'paupers'. These rich sources of information about the Victorian poor are housed in large volumes at the National Archives (MH12) and are not yet indexed. Copies of their complaints were returned to the local Poor Law Board and may be housed in County Record Offices. https://intheirownwriteblog.com/about/
