Ranked Choice Voting:
What You Need To Know

Voters have had so many questions about Ranked Choice Voting and the overall process this year. So as we prepare for Primary Day, we wanted to share some of the top questions we've been asked...
Do I need to memorize my ranked choice list?

No. You can definitely bring notes with you. There is no issue having materials on-hand to vote thoughtfully.

Should I rank the maximum number of candidates?

No, you don't have to. But you should rank at least three in the categories where there is a choice. Why? Because Ranked Choice Voting can produce a winner who did not get the most 'first' votes.

Are there lists that I can use to guide me?

Yes! Everyone has different priorities and will rank choices in different ways. There really isn't a single slate; but here are some organizations that can help you consider candidates by priority area.

Can I rank two 'number 1'?

No! This is actually a big one -- your ballot will be disqualified if you vote for two in any of the ranked elections (note for some positions, such as District Attorney, you can only choose one candidate). So please don't double rank.

Can I bring my children?

Yes! We heard a lot of voters say that they were worried about trying to vote with kids. But bring them! In fact, we found that it was a fun and educational experience for our children!
