PAWS For The Latest

News & Events From Centre County PAWS

A Note From Our Executive Director

The past 2 weeks have been very exciting here at PAWS. We reopened to the public, but not with the same hours we held pre-COVID closure. We went from 20 open hours per week to 34 open hours per week. In order to build a compassionate Centre Region where animals thrive, we know it’s important to be as available to the community as possible. Volunteers will continue to work during our non-public hours, of course, to ensure our cats and dogs are well cared for.

Our Board Members voted this month for Board Officers. Our new President, Vice President, and returning Treasurer have all submitted a note about their hopes and plans for PAWS and a little bit about themselves.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to Dave Abler, who has served as the PAWS President for over a decade. Dave has provided tremendous support to all of our staff and volunteers and is always a pragmatic, thoughtful, and effective leader.

Stay cool,

Lisa Bahr
Executive Director
President, Ryan Macaluso
I am honored to be elected President of an amazing organization that I love and makes such a large contribution to our community! I have volunteered at PAWS for over five years, including roles as a front desk volunteer, dog and cat foster, finance and facilities committee member, and the Board of Directors.
In everything I do, I find ways to improve, make things easier, and more efficient. I look forward to building on the success we experienced in our history through promoting the mission, vision, and values of PAWS and supporting our incredible staff and volunteers. Volunteers are the core of our organization and are integral to the continued growth of PAWS. With everyone’s help, we can make an even bigger impact as a community resource and leader in animal welfare.
Vice President, Ginny Newman
I'm delighted to have been elected to serve as Vice President on the PAWS Board of Directors. Five years ago, I retired from Penn State and started volunteering at PAWS.
My volunteering began with doing cat care, which I still do on a weekly basis. Since being elected to the Board of Directors in 2017 I've served on several committees including the Fur Ball Committee and the Executive Director Search Committee.

Currently I serve as team leader for our cat care trainers and mentors, and I am also a member of the Cat Team. I'm very proud of PAWS and believe it has a very strong foundation as an organization and a positive reputation in the community. As Vice President I hope to help build on those strengths and to find new ways to continually improve PAWS and expand support of its mission.
Treasurer, Reenie Ferretti
I look forward to serving another year as Treasurer at PAWS as we continue to manage our budget and finances through these unprecedented times. While we were faced with challenges over the last year, PAWS was able to maintain a balanced budget thanks to volunteers and staff quickly adjusting their approaches to fundraising and seeking out new grant opportunities.
I am optimistic about the future for PAWS as we come out of COVID restrictions thanks to everyone that continues to contribute to PAWS to support our ongoing mission.

Volunteers Needed

Training is available once again for numerous areas within PAWS.

Front Desk Volunteers are the face and voice of PAWS. Front Desk duties include meeting and greeting visitors to PAWS, mastering knowledge of PAWS policies and procedures, answering phones, taking dog / cat surrender information, and collaborating with volunteers from the cat and dog wings. Best of all you get to work alongside amazing PAWS cats and dogs!

Cat Care Volunteers feed, water, and generally care for all of the cats in our facility. They help maintain cleanliness throughout the cat wing and keep our supplies stocked. Volunteers who are available to work at least 1 shift per month (approximately 30 hours per year) are encouraged to sign up. Classes are filling up quickly, so check out our Cat Care webpage today.
