COBRE News for July 2, 2021

COBRE News
In September 2019, the COBRE hosted a 2-day Hackathon event, where community members, students, and professionals gathered to brainstorm innovative solutions to the opioid crisis.

The third-place winner, the We-Can app, is a free mobile application, available on iOS and Android in both English and Spanish, whose mission is to equip individuals with information and resources to help them access treatment for opioid use disorder and understand the risks of medications for opioid use disorder. The We-Can app is designed to educate patients, concerned family members, friends, and citizens about stigma experienced by those who have a substance use disorder associated with opioids, and about available harm reduction and treatment options. Currently, We-Can is partnering with community pharmacies to pilot the app in southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with the long-term goal of expanding to the greater Northeast region in the next year.

We’ve launched a new program to further support combating the nation’s opioid crisis. The Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Loan Repayment Program [lnks.gd] (STAR LRP) expands access to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment by adding several new disciplines, including bachelor’s-level SUD counselors, behavioral health paraprofessionals, and clinical support staff. The program also broadens access to the clinical best practice of a “warm handoff” and recognizes the effectiveness of integrated SUD treatment teams. Eligible health professionals can receive up to $250,000 in exchange for a six-year, full-time service commitment at an expanded variety of SUD facility types. Eligible sites may also apply to become approved for the program. Find out if you’re eligible [lnks.gd] and apply by July 22, 7:30 p.m. ET.

Governor’s Overdose Prevention and Intervention Task Force Cross-Cutting Workgroup on Racial Equity Seeks Volunteers+
The Cross-Cutting Workgroup on Racial Equity of Governor Daniel J. McKee’s Overdose Prevention and Intervention Task Force is a coalition of healthcare professionals, State agency administrators, community leaders and advocates, peers, activists, and government representatives who are also involved in statewide overdose prevention and intervention efforts. This workgroup seeks to address racial equity in healthcare, advocate for criminal justice and legislative reforms, and increase the diversity in leadership roles in the 10 working groups across the Task Force Overdose Prevention Strategic Plan.

The Racial Equity Workgroup recognizes that having representative membership is critical to its success; therefore, People of Color are strongly encouraged to attend meetings and become Workgroup volunteers. The Workgroup is chaired by Dennis Bailer and Nya Reichley of Project Weber/RENEW. Please feel free to reach out to Dennis, Nya, or Monica Tavares, RIDOH Education and Outreach Coordinator, if you have any questions or suggested discussion topics.
