National news

Dear swimsa family!

The SMSC Lausanne 2021 organizing committee is pleased to announce an event on integrative medicine from the 15th-17th of October 2021. You will learn about Traditional Chinese medicine, hypnosis and homeopathy among many other interesting topics. What is the place of these practices in our future medical career? Are they beneficial for the patients and how do we inform them about these options?
We are looking forward to introducing you to different speakers working on these topics and eventually helping you discover some interesting medical paradigms.

We hope to see many of you in Lausanne this fall!

🗞 Statement on the federal exam 🗞

swimsa, in cooperation with a handful of 6th-year students from different universities, made a survey among all 6th-year students about the impact of COVID-19 on education, mental health and the federal licensing exam. The survey results were presented to the deans of all Swiss universities and to the MEBEKO (Medizinalberufekommission/Commission des professions médicales). In these discussions, swimsa also pointed out mental health problems and the impact of COVID-19 in regard to practical education, especially due to reduced training possibilities during the practical year.

Call for SWG: Vaccination policy paper writing
Deadline: 10.07.2021

swimsa is looking for motivated students who are willing to invest time over the summer to join the small working group (SWG) for a policy paper on vaccinations. As a new priority of the IFMSA European Region, a policy paper forms the basis of our actions as an association.

  • What would the timeline look like? The plan is to present the policy paper at the next delegate's assembly in November 2021, so the aim would be to finish the paper in September.
  • Do I need much experience? We are looking for anyone who is motivated to write this paper in a small team. A step-by-step explanation will be provided at the start of the writing process.
If this is something that interests you or if you have any further questions, reach out to us by mail: npo@swimsa.ch.

New Statement released: Planetary Health in the Curriculum

In face of the climate and ecological crisis rapidly escalating, swimsa released a new statement that demands Swiss medical faculties with high urgency to integrate planetary health into their curricula. This statement has been presented to all deaneries at a national meeting. Now, it’s up to us as students to work together with them to achieve meaningful change.

Read the statement here:

Do you think this is important and want to advocate for change at your university?

Feel free to contact planetaryhealth@swimsa.ch – they will help you to contact your deaneries and start a local working group on planetary health!

What is Planetary Health?
«Planetary Health» is concerned with the interconnectedness of human health and the social, economic, political and natural systems of our planet on which the existence of human civilisation depends . Planetary Health thus describes a concept in which the health of the planet as the basis of human civilisation is considered to be the most important factor for human health and all life. The concept uses synergy effects through a holistic view, for example, by simultaneously stabilising the climate, protecting health and promoting a sustainable economy by protecting, preserving and improving the natural foundations of life.

SHAPED is being formed

The interprofessional team in SHAPED is still growing, expanding their reach and improving the established projects: Once again we had ten participants of four different healthcare professions in two groups caring for Ms Sommer who was very shaky and slow in her movements. She was sent to the hospital by her family doctor but somehow some drugs got forgotten to be administered and the team was forced to overthink the given diagnosis and make sure Ms Sommer can leave the hospital to her home safely.

Don’t miss our next clinical discussion. Are you finally finished with your exams and some spare time to explore another profession in the health care sector?

Register right now for our Shadowing program and follow a trained health care worker through their daily life in a hospital or ambulant practice!

Stay tuned on our websiteinstagram and facebook accounts to not miss out on great opportunities!

“The stereotype about occupational therapists doing handcraft all day long is definitely not true - at least in the Schweizer Paraplegikerzentrum. They are experts in making splints, fitting wheelchairs and other aids such as seat cushions. I had no clue that there were so many different wheelchair models and you need to measure and figure out many details about the patient to find the individually suitable model.”

Students actively engaged in elections of new
Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

fvmed, University of Zurich

On June 2, the elections for the new Dean and Deputy Dean at the University of Zurich were held. Since for us as students it is of particular interest who is holding this position, we intensively prepared the elections, organised student hearings with all candidates for the Dean position and asked them questions about their visions and plans. We then presented a statement at the Faculty Assembly. Important criteria from our side were:

  • Meaningful student participation and inclusive decision-making from the very beginning
  • Equal opportunities, diversity & sustainability in the faculty not just as big words, but the implementation of effective measures
  • Innovative redesign of teaching in view of the PROFILES curriculum revision
  • More transparency and open, effective communication channels

The faculty was very pleased by our engagement and welcomed our input. Prof. Frank Rühli was elected as the new Dean of our faculty for the next four years and Prof. Hanns Ulrich Zeilhofer was elected as Deputy Dean. We congratulate both of them warmly and are looking forward to cooperation and more student participation in our faculty! We would also like to thank all the candidates for their great commitment.

We now plan on writing a letter to our new deans in which we want to compile the most important concerns of all students. We can only encourage our fellow student representatives at other universities to also use their voices when it comes to faculty elections!

Sunny greetings from Züri <3
