Woodlawn Without Walls
What a fantastic week we have been having here at the church. The halls are filled with children laughing, singing and learning about how to Armor up with God for Vacation Bible School! In worship the past two weeks we have been preparing for Vacation Bible School with our Armor of God sermon series. We have been learning how the armor of God equips us for our journey of discipleship.
Our first Sunday we focused on our discipleship call to stand up to injustice and how the Belt of Truth and Breast Plate of righteousness equip us to suit up, stand up and persevere as we stand up for justice and truth.

Last Sunday we talked about the our discipleship call to follow God! And how our Shoes of Peace and Shield of Faith can guide us and protect us from doubts, fears and anxieties as we share the Good News!

This Sunday, in the 9:00am service, we will conclude our worship series as we focus on the last two pieces in our suit of Armor: the Helmet of Salvation and the Sword of the Spirit.

And in the 10:45am service, in the Worship Center, you won’t want to miss the VBS celebration! There will be songs, dancing and many lessons shared from the children. If you can’t make it at 10:45 on Sunday, don’t worry, there will be a Vacation Bible School celebration video shared Sunday on both Facebook and YouTube.

Hope you will join us in celebrating a wonderful Vacation Bible School for 2021.

“Jesus answered, The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:29-31
This week our youth have an amazing opportunity to love our neighbors.  We will be partnering with a number of other UMC youth groups from around the Wichita area to serve in a mission week with those in need right here in our own community.  We will be painting houses, building wheelchair ramps, serving at UM Open Door, and doing many other projects in Wichita and the surrounding area.

As we serve, we are going to focus on loving our neighbor in our opening and closing worship times as we learn to truly love our neighbor.  As you are out and about this week, be on the lookout for teams of youth serving in a variety of projects.  By Thursday, they will be pretty easy to spot in bright neon green shirts and masks!  As they engage in work in our own backyard, pray for them and seek out ways that you, too, can love your neighbors.

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director
This year was my first official year being the director of VBS. To say I was nervous would be an understatement!  I wanted so badly for the week to go smoothly, volunteers to have everything they need, and for all the kids to leave here with smiles on their faces. I definitely underestimated just how much work goes into making VBS week a success.
My team and I have spent countless hours preparing lessons, making decorations, and recruiting volunteers. This week would not have been possible without everyone listed below!  All the volunteers and the kids made VBS an AMAZING week!  Also, a big shout out to Lois Dewitt, our administration assistant in the office! I appreciate all her help and for making my job easier!

THANK YOU all so much!!!!  Please read the list below, and if you see one of them, tell them thank you!  VBS is busy and can be a hectic week.  So I appreciate all their hard work and dedication!!

Moment for Mission

Operation Back to School
School Supplies

Operation Back to School provides approximately 350 students in the Derby USD 260 school district with a backpack and supplies for the start of the new school year. In 2020 the pandemic made this mission even more challenging as we were unable to collect donated backpacks and supplies, and everything had to be purchased.

We appreciate your generosity a few weeks ago with our Moment for Mission for backpacks.  This week, our focus is on purchasing school supplies to fill those backpacks!  You can help Operation Back to School by making a donation for our Moment for Mission for the needed supplies.

This mission is a blessing to our students, congregation and our Derby community! Woodlawn would  be unable to serve so many students without your ongoing support and love. Thank you again for supporting our Derby students!
Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or
go to www.woodlawnumc.net and click the “Giving” link to give online.

The Big Vax Cash Giveaway Coming July 9

Get your SHOT at winning one of 12 CASH prizes up to $500 by getting your first Covid vaccine on Friday, July 9, at the Derby Public Library Community Room between 2 and 7 pm.

A total of $2000 in cash will be given away to those who receive either their first Pfizer Vaccine or the Johnson and Johnson single dose vaccine at the clinic on July 9. Ten $100 prizes and two $500 prizes will be given away that day. The odds of winning will be determined by the number of persons getting vaccinated on that day. For example, if 48 people show up to be vaccinated, then your odds of winning are 1 in 4!

The Vaccine clinic is a partnership of Damm Pharmacies and Woodlawn United Methodist Church, as part of the Kansas Beats the Virus Project led by the Kansas Leadership Center. The Derby Recreation Center and Derby Public Library are also partnering to provide a place for the clinic and transportation.

More information is available by phoning Derby Drug, a Damm Pharmacy, at 316-788-6669.
Operation Back to School
It is that time of year again to start looking for backpacks to help the USD 260 students as they begin school this fall. Backpacks for all ages are needed, including larger sizes for the older kids. Backpacks can be dropped off in the church office during regular office hours. Backpacks are needed by enrollment time and will be packed mid-July, as school begins August 11, 2021.
Come one, come all! Wear your Red and white and your blue jeans and join us for one outdoor Worship service at 10am on Sunday, July 4. We will worship on the south lawn between the Youth Center and Jack and Jill. You won’t want to miss the music. The praise band and the choir will perform selected pieces as well as an awesome collaboration piece together!

Bring your lawn chairs and pop up tents if you’d like some shade. We will have water available as you arrive and ice pops for refreshments after service.

Operation St. Francis
A new ministry is beginning in Derby to help our community reunite with lost pets! This ministry seeks to provide low cost microchipping and provide information about low cost veterinary services and pet supplies.
Their first event will be an open air market for pet families to receive discounted services, products and education. It will be held outdoors at Woodlawn UMC on Saturday, June 26th from 8 am to 1 pm.  Animal Control will be on site to answer questions and provide safety tips for use during 4th of July.

Discounted and free services that day will be:
$10 microchipping, $10 nail clippings, $5 to $10 baths (based on size of animal), food pantry, basic exams by a vet tech and free dog training. Dog and cat rescue groups will have adoptable pets available, and there will be a blessing of the animals.  A list of all participating agencies will be available soon.

The group is also seeking donations of pet food and supplies that will be used to supplement homeless and low income residents who have pets. A donation box will be available at Woodlawn starting June 2.

Contact Carla Stroot at 316-393-1632 if you would like to help.

UM Open Door: Urgent Help Needed
Dear Friends and Colleagues –
Recently Open Door had an unexpected staff vacancy in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. This program serves individuals 60+ years of age who have a household income at or below 130% of Federal Poverty Guidelines a monthly box of food. The vacancy of the position has left us in desperate need for help. If you would be willing to drive the agency van to deliver food to a homebound elder, we need you! Each month an average of just under 400 elders (you won’t have to do all of them) receive a home delivery in Sedgwick County. We are also in need of specialized help from someone who has forklift experience and willing to come help us in the warehouse with unloading trucks, picking pallets of food off shelving, packing boxes, etc.  Do you have those skills or do you know someone who does and has some time to help? Please reach out to Tim Stead, Coordinator of Volunteers, at
tstead@umopendoor.org or call LouAnn at 267-0511.  We need to cover these responsibilities until we can hire a new staff person. However, if you find you love the work, we could use some on-going drivers and warehouse support for staff.

I hope you will join me in prayer for the right people to come forward to lend us the time and talent we need to serve the elders in our community.

Warm Regards,

Deann Smith
