Hi * | FNAME | *! Welcome to AP's July newsletter

This is the last newsletter before the summer break, and we therefore wish everyone a good and restful break. Obviously, this is (again) not going to be a normal summer, as the COVID-19 pandemic still affects our lives, and much of our work. Still, we hope the summer can offer a moment of respite, and give fresh energies for the fall.

We need peacebuilding now more than ever, which is why we have worked hard to boost our activities and maintain them through the summer.

In this issue, Bernardo Venturi, our Director, analyzes the European Peace Facility - EPF for HuffPost Italia.
Furthermore, you can find several articles on a range of different issues and countries, including: climate change and the Syrian conflict, Papa New Guinea’s judicial system, on the continued challenges for women’s participation in peace processes; youth and violent extremism in Central Asia, and women’s participation to the peace process in Colombia.

We hope that you will find this update useful and informative.

Un nuovo strumento europeo per la pace?

By Bernardo Venturi, Director, Agency for Peacebuilding

The Italian Parliament has recently approved the Italian peace and security missions abroad. AP’s contributed to the debate and appreciate that the law presents some references to strengthening the role of civil society as an actor in international crisis areas, with particular attention to peacebuilding.

Research and analysis

In April, we launched a call for articles to collect submissions on the following issues:

  • Environmental crises and peacebuilding
  • Women’s role in peace and security
  • Youth, Peace and Security
  • The state of European Peacebuilding
The call was a clear success: we received many articles based on quality research and experiences. The authors were very diverse in terms of their experiences and interests, and we thank all of them for their contributions.

Planning and communicating the Women, Peace and Security Agenda

On July 12, AP’s President, Bernardo Monzani, participated in a workshop to reflect on the role of civil society organisations in shaping and contributing to the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in Italy.

The event was organised in Rome by the Human Rights Centre of the University of Padua, and saw the participation of around 25 representatives from Italian and European organisations. Conversations were stimulating and interesting, and on the whole the workshop served as a good opportunity to reflect, together, on how to re-energize future advocacy efforts around the WPS agenda.
Evaluation women empowerment efforts in Afghanistan

At the end of June and in early July, AP’s Senior Advisor Huma Saeed travelled to Kabul as part of the final evaluation of the “Safeguarding Afghanistan’s Future through Empowerment” (SAFE) project.

The project, implemented by the NGO War Child Canada and recently concluded, sought to promote women’s rights and participation through economic empowerment activities, legal aid and community-based awareness raising.

In Kabul, Huma met and interviewed more than 40 beneficiaries and participants, who came not only from Kabul, but also from Kandahar and Nangarhar. This was a valuable opportunity to reflect on both the project’s successes and on the future of women’s rights in Afghanistan, a particularly relevant issue given the recent resurgence of the Taliban.
