Dr. Marina Kostina on a lake
The human brain is unmatched in its ability to adapt. Within that ability lies our desire for more. As our brain adapts to the highs or lows of a stimulus we change. As it relates to the traditional addictions, like drugs and alcohol, that adaptation causes us to require more of the stimulus in order to feel as we expect from the stimulus. As our use continues to increase so does that awesome adapting power of the brain.

This is a healthy process for all intents and purposes, and, although most notably the cause of addiction, it is used to heal from addiction as well.

The most important thing to recognize is that if you are experiencing the need to increase your interaction with a stimulus, that just means you have a healthy brain. Addiction isn’t just a word for those of us who have had issues with drugs and alcohol, it’s a subject for everyone with a healthy brain.

So if you watch Netflix shows, or order from Amazon more than you’d like, if you work, clean, or engage in relationships to escape something else, there is no need to avoid looking at it as an addiction, it is what’s supposed to happen. If our brains didn’t adapt we would have never made it this far.
