Poulsbo Sons of Norway 2-44 - President's Message

Salutations and Happy July to everyone,

“Summer time and the living is easy” comes to mind as I sit here in the sunshine listening to the cacophony of birds which, in retrospect, is really a melodious welcoming of the first full day of summer. I’m trying to wrap my mind around providing an interesting message—but it’s not easy on such a glorious day!! How fortunate we are to live in this beautiful corner of the world! Along with that sentiment, let me say how grateful I am to belong to the Poulsbo Sons of Norway lodge—an organization filled with caring members who are eager to help make our lodge successful.

Special thanks go out this month to the directors of our Building Association who constantly respond quickly whenever they are needed. You are all wonderful! I also must thank Ingunn Kuester and crew for another very successful meatball dinner to help welcome Midsummer Fest and to Ingunn and Lizbeth Doving for proposing and carrying through with the waffle pop-up on the 19th. I hope many of you were in Poulsbo on that Saturday and able to take advantage of the yummy waffles.

Speaking of yummy food, we are in the process of revamping our food services. I encourage members who would like to be involved to let us know. We will need members to do Friday night dinners and to work those crews, to be on the Rotary breakfast crews (that will start in mid-July), to get involved in making lefse or krumkake or meatballs or other specialty foods, and to volunteer for Kaffe Stua and other special events here at the lodge. We have a new Food Services Committee that is looking into what the lodge will be able to offer in the way of food services moving forward now that the covid regulations will, hopefully, be easing up. The committee has several things to look at. For instance, will we have enough volunteers to support our Rotary breakfasts every Friday morning? Will we be able to offer Kaffe Stua and, if so, will we have enough teams to do that every week or is one Wednesday a month more realistic? Who should coordinate the Friday night dinners? Should we try to provide Tuesday night dinners during the music in the park months or is there something better to offer? Karen Zabinski, Debbie Goyette, and Lorena Maxwell have graciously volunteered to be on that committee and I encourage everyone who wants to be involved and has ideas on what the lodge might offer to call one of them or the office and volunteer. A very special thank you to Karen, Debbie, and Lorena!

By the time you receive this message, June 30th will have come and gone and we will, hopefully, know what the next stage of “everything opening up” means in this covid seige. We are excited to see what the new normal (after covid) will look like. Let’s hope we manage to keep the good things we’ve learned since March of 2020 and to discard the rest. Have a wonderful summer and I’ll see you at the lodge.

I know you’ve heard this before and it’s true--it’s a New Dawn, a New Day!

Fred være med deg til neste måned

THIS OLD LODGE
In the last lodge meeting, you (the lodge and building association members) elected three directors for the Building Association board: Paul Nicholson (continuing), Ray Jones (new), and Brennan Webster (new).  Each have three-year terms ending 2024.  Thanks to Peter Gerstel and Jerry Block for your service as outgoing directors. We look forward to working together to keep up the building and grounds for the lodge to conduct the important business of social gatherings and cultural heritage in the Norwegian manner of things.
The big room upstairs (Marine), where most of our rental business goes, had its air conditioning repaired.  We had been going at 50% capacity for awhile now and now we are running at full function.  The coffee pot upstairs was also repaired in time for the Rotary breakfasts to resume in July. While dormant for COVID some faculties will be expected to fail so we have been diligent to attend to those areas that will once again be of use to us and serve our members and patrons.
The lodge pays $5,000 a month to the building association to keep up the building and to insure members and building from loss and liability. Part of this “rent” monthly is saved to replace our 20+ year roof.  In a couple years we should have enough saved to start looking at our options for roof replacement.  We are thankful the lodge board values saving and preparing for the future needs of the building. In the meantime, we have been aware of our large wood floor being worn out from years of events and rentals.  The best dance floor in the county needs a makeover!  Cost estimates to refinish the floor range from $10-15k.  If you are interested in partnering with a handful of generous members to fund this restoration and bring back the glory of this lodge when it was built in 1972, please let me know and we can make this happen.  Thanks for your support!
Sincerely,
Paul Anunson
Building Association Chairman
