June/July Newsletter

Summer started off very hot in our neck of the woods and now added a bit of  smoke... so grateful for our AC and humidifer that keeps us cool so we can keep on making guitars.  We had a lot of orders last year and we appreciate everyone's patience as each individual guitar makes it's way into production.

We hope you are all enjoying some musical events in your area - we look forward to music this summer and into the fall with the Sisters Folk Festival the 1st weekend in October.  Stay cool and keep playing music!

There are many back issues of our newsletter, Click here to check them out!

SHOP NEWS

Levi Carbonell-Weiss
Set-up

Levi's love of wood working started in high school wood shop, along with helping convert an old building into artist spaces.  In his early 20's he traveled across the country meeting many musicians and falling in love with country, bluegrass and folk music.   Being from the same music scene in Michigan, Levi heard about Thompson Guitars when Billy Strings ordered his first Dreadnought.  He also found out that Peter Rowan had a connection with Preston and  a few Thompson's in his collection.  Levi wanted to follow his passion of music and craftsmanship and so began the journey of investigating different luthier schools.

He ultimately landed at Vermont Instruments with instructor George Morris.  George studied and worked with Charles Fox just like Preston did back in the 80's.  Levi's goal was always to work here at our shop in Sisters.  On a side note Jamison Owen who works in set-up and Levi went to high school together and both ended up in luthier schools at the same period of their lives.  Levi was so happy for Jamison when he was hired and has been after us for quite a while to give him a shot.  His passion for bluegrass, along with the skills he has acquired as a budding luthier, found him a spot here at Thompson guitars.  We look forward to a long and fruitful future with him supporting our efforts in the set-up department.
NEW INLAY PROJECT
We get so many cool requests for inlays.  This one was a tribute to the client's grandfather.  It started off with the idea of using an image of the maple tree from in front of the family home and ended up being the whole scene. What a beautiful heirloom to honor his grandfather with the last name of Thompson.  Thanks again to Simon's creativity capturing this setting in pearl, wood and stone.
