After being a student, teacher and assistant principal at Lane, Edwina Thompson finally reached the top of the school, as the Lane Local School Council (LSC) unanimously voted last Tuesday to confirm Thompson as Lane’s next principal. This comes after former principal Brian Tennison’s departure on June 1. Sports Editor Alex Burstein and Assistant Editor Aidan Sadovi have more on Lane’s new principal.

The 2020-21 school year is sure to go down in the record books as one of the strangest years in education ever for CPS, with a majority of learning being done virtually. Departments had to shift their ways of learning drastically, especially in the music department, due to sound and visual constraints. Reporter Jocelyn Garcia has more on how the music department changed their teaching strategies this past year.

Though it’s only been released for one month, “SOUR,” the debut album by teenage star Olivia Rodrigo has already become one of the top albums of the year. The album, which followed the release of three hit singles, focuses mainly on teenage love and angst. A&E Editor Selena Kuznikov has a review of the 11-track album.

You snooze, we news: end of year edition

Here’s a look at the top stories around Lane Tech from this past year

LSC votes to remove School Resource Officers (SROs) after tense meetings
Across July and August, Local School Council’s (LSC) throughout the city were tasked with voting whether to keep School Resource Officers (in-school police officers) after the CPS Board of Education voted not to oust them for all schools. After a protest against SROs at Lane claiming they are harmful, the Lane LSC voted 9-3 to remove them from Lane.

Lane school officials remove Indian symbol, search for new one
After an unanimous vote by the LSC to remove the Indian symbol in early April, school officials followed suit and officially removed it just days later. The initiative, which has been campaigned by some for years, picked up steam in the last school year. Following the decision, the LSC formed a Symbol Renaming Committee, which missed its original goal of finding a new symbol by graduation and is now aiming for August.

After months of debate, some students return to in-person learning
As vaccinations started to roll out in early 2021, CPS and Chicago Teachers Union representatives were going back and forth on when students should return to the building. After cluster program students returned earlier in the year, the Lane LSC heard from and saw from stakeholders and crafted a resolution on their wants regarding a return to in-person learning for the rest of students. This all led-up to hybrid learning starting on April 19 for some students who opted-in.

Following Brian Tennison’s departure, Edwina Thompson confirmed as new Lane principal
Adding on to the normal busy nature of the end of the school year, there was an added hurdle this year: finding a new principal. After former Principal Brian Tennison announced his departure in early May, the LSC moved quickly through the selection process, eventually choosing Lane Assistant Principal Edwina Thompson over Jones Assistant Principal Therese Plunkett.
