Eudunda is a wonderful place to live, work and play or to visit. We try to give you some of the local news here. There is still so much more news being missed out. You might have a story to tell, seen something worth sharing, want to tell everyone about your organisation or business.
This newsletter could do that for you. Peter Herriman - Editor.
Monday 5th July 2021 Commencing at 7.00pm Saints Clubhouse, 29 Bruce Street, Eudunda.
DO YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR YOUR TOWN? “It’s and exciting time for Eudunda” Silo painting commenced, Caravan Park extensions, Camp Kitchen being built – plus much more! COME BE A PART OF IT!
This is a PUBLIC meeting, and ALL residents are invited to attend.
40 years have passed since the Eudunda Football Club played and won a triple premiership in the Barossa and Light Football Association. The 1981 premierships were a remarkable achievement, and the Southern Saints Football Club would like to again honour all players and officials who were a part of this historic occasion.
A reunion weekend is being organized for Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of July. To enable everyone to catch up with their old teammates and friends from that year. An open invitation is extended to members of the Eudunda and Robertstown communities, and the families and friends of that and the current era, to come along and take part in the celebrations at the new Eudunda Sporting Clubrooms. Come along on the Saturday and watch the Southern Saints take on North Clare.
This weekend is being promoted as a reunion weekend.
As the Southern Saints, a proud club, comprising of the old Eudunda and Robertstown clubs, there will also be celebrations for the 2001 Robertstown A Grade premiership, along with many netball premierships.
On the Sunday we are planning a quiet get together to continue the celebrations, more information to come.
We will be placing information regarding the weekend on the Eudunda Robertstown Football Club Facebook page as well as the Southern Goyder News, please have a look and follow what we will be posting.
Looking forward to a great weekend, a chance for us to honour the members who were part of a remarkable and memorable day back in 1981 as well as coming together as past and current supporters of Eudunda, Robertstown, and the Saints.

The Eudunda Robertstown Football Club and the Saints Eudunda Robertstown Netball Club are holding a fundraiser on Thursday 24th June at Eudunda for the Kindy.
Normally, at this point of time in a Lawn Bowls Club’s operational year, activity would be subdued but we have just received some fantastic news.
We were successful with our application to the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing’s Infrastructure Grant Program ‘GRASSROOTS FACILITIES PROGRAM’, winning $190,000 to enable us to install 2 new synthetic turf greens.
The total project is valued at $380,000 and with securing a loan from the Regional Council of Goyder, the club has worked very hard to raise the remaining funds to begin the project in the coming months.
The new greens will transform our club from a pennant season only venue to one that is able to conduct events all year round. The availability of the bowling surface for ad hoc bowling will be greatly increased and maintenance and operating costs will show significant savings over the coming years.
The club wishes to extend its grateful thanks to the Regional Council of Goyder, Bowls SA, Samantha Freeman (Sport & Recreation Development Officer – Central Mid North STARCLUB Program, Local Businesses, Local Clubs, Local Organisations and individuals for their indications of support for our project. Their input and help greatly affected the outcome of our application. Thankyou to all those involved. Thanks also to Andrew and Ruth for their efforts in collating and submitting our project for consideration.
Samantha Freeman of the STARCLUB Program said on thier Facebook Page, “Congratulations to the Committee that worked very hard, for many years to secure this funding. The committee says the new synthetic greens will pay for themselves over a few years by reducing water bills and volunteer hours maintaining the current lawns.”
Which saw the following executive officials elected: President, Judy Milde Secretary, Ruth Scoot Treasurer, Bill Mader.
Bill was also appointed Project Manager for the installation of the new greens. A motion to obtain and install a row of folding spectator seats was passed and the flying squad leapt into action and had them on site and installed super quick. Well done and thanks to those involved.
The South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS} website listed a house fire at Emu Downs on the 18th June just before 8:30pm. CFS crews were called to the Kotz Road, Emu Downs property.
Approximately 25 volunteers found the house engulfed in flames and helped put the fire out. Thankfully all occupants were safe, but the house was destroyed. causing approximately $300,000 damage. The cause of the fire is unknown and being investigated. The report was submitted by Adam Pascoe.
Eudunda Community Op Shop – Now Sell Electrical Items, Plants and Pumpkins.
The electrical items have been tested and tagged by Goyder Electrical so they are in working and safe order, and have been flying off the shelf as quick as our volunteers can display them.
The bag of Butternut Pumpkins comes from the Riverland and they currently sell for $7.00 per bag. The pumpkins come in small, medium & large, roughly 6kg per bag, and will last for 6-8 months (if stored properly). Great for some winter pumpkin soup.
The Op Shop is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm.
FINAL CHANCE We are meeting to see IF it is possible to REVIVE the Eudunda Christmas Party for 2021. A few more community members have shown interest. However, we still need your help…….
Please come along to the meeting to make yourself known. There are three ways you could help:
Joining the committee as an organiser / coordinator.
Being able to help through out the planning stage but not necessarily attend meetings.
Being available to volunteer in the few weeks proceeding the event and on the night.
If you are wanting to be involved BUT can’t attend this meeting please indicate below your level of availability i.e. 1, 2 or 3.
WITHOUT NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS & HELPERS THIS WONDERFUL COMMUNITY EVENT WILL BE NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE.
Tickets are going fast for the July Show: The Hussy Hicks & Full Band on 17 July 2021 at ‘The Barn at Wombat Flat’.
The Barn at Wombat Flat have some fantastic acts booked for thier 2021 Season, and your present would be somethings special, unique and you can choose the show.
The highlight event for may motorcycle followers will be this year’s Hardi 24hour coming up soon on the weekend of the 10th & 11th of July 2021.
The event starts with the first rider leaving from the Kapunda Trotting Track at t 11:01am and if all went well the first rider will return again at 11:01am exactly 24 hours later.
The course is quite hard on both bike and rider, and there is usually an attrition rate of at least 50%.
The event could not be run without massive support from many clubs who camp out as control points which operate over the 24 hours, the businesses and organisations who support in many ways from Sponsorship and other ways and individuals who may be land owners or others who help in some way.
As well as the rugged men & women who ride the event, this has been and always will be as much a fun weekend for the spectators, as they watch their favorites from some of the best, most beautiful scenery in South Australia. We do ask spectators and all who attend to respect the land owners property, and to take your rubbish away with you please, to not camp on private property without permission and also to drive or ride carefully on the roads and NOT in any properties. THANK YOU!
If you have any questions – please contact the Hardi 24hour Organising Committee
WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS YEARS – HARDI 24 HOUR TRIAL.
The event is free to spectators For all information including the newly released Rider Draw
The ‘Robby 2 Day’ trial is very popular, especially with local riders and spectators.
Starting at Main Control at the Robertstown Oval spectators grab a bite to eat, and some drinks, sus out the spectator options and head out to enjoy some great motorcycle action.
The long running Velocette Motorcycle Club, traditionally hold the event over the June ‘Long Weekend’, this year it fell on the 12th & 13th June.
The event was unable to run last year (2020) due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, so it is with much relief of the organisers and competitors alike to be able to get out and enjoy this well known event in the motorcycle calendar.
The Lew Job 2 Day Reliability Trial is Round 3 of the South Australian Reliability Trials Championship.
Many riders come to compete at the “Robby 2 Day” because they enjoy it. Those competing in the SART Championships often consider this event as a Shake Down” for the even more grueling Hardi 24 Hour Trialwhich will this year be held at Kapunda area on the 10th & 11th July.
The Census Field Manager for this area for the upcoming Census in August has told us that the area is currently short on Census Field Officer applicants.
Information from the Census helps governments, businesses and not for profit organisations across the country make important decisions. For example, community groups use Census data to help plan services in your area.
You can play an important role to help tell your community’s story.
It may be cold outside but that is no excuse to sit idle inside. Stoke up the fire and begin working on some needlework projects for the Eudunda Show this year. It may seem a long time until November but lets get working while it is cosy inside.
2021 is the International year of Fruit and Vegetable
2021 is the International year of Fruit and Vegetable, and the needlework section of the show book features several classes that take up this theme. Make a pair of pot holders or a door stop that use this theme. Maybe now it the time to clean out the cupboard in the spare room and look for a collection of old and interesting articles that feature fruit and vegetables.
Over these cold months you have time to refresh your knitting or crocheting skills, or even learn them from new. There is nothing easier to make than a scarf or a hat or even a knee rug. Coat hangers and cushions, wall hangings and windcheaters, there is just so much variety to choose from. While you have the time google how to do smocking and revive an old skill by making a smocked garment.
For the children they can decorate a pom pom or two, or do a long stitch or cross stitch. Those not so keen on using their hands might be able to borrow the sewing machine and make an article with that.
Stay warm and start stitching because before we know it the cold weather will be gone and the show will be knocking on our door.

REGIONAL COUNCIL OF GOYDER RENEWABLES ENERGY PROJECTS UPDATE REPORT – 1 JUNE 2021
1 ELECTRANET PROJECT ENERGY CONNECT – INTERCONNECTOR
Electranet have announced on 31 May 2021 that the Australian Energy Regulator has approved the expenditure of $2.28 billion to deliver the project from Robertstown to Wagga Wagga in NSW. This includes $457 million for Electranet to construct the South Australian section of the project. Transgrid has made an investment decision to proceed with the NSW section of the project & the Electranet Board will consider it’s final investment decision in the first week of June.
I have been in contact with the management of the 2 contractors that are tendering for the position of Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contractor to the Interconnector project. These companies are Downer Utilities & UGL. They are very keen to use local accommodation, business services & labour as part of their tender.
I have prepared & provided a costing of a local accommodation proposal for approximately 130 workers being housed for 12 months in furnished residential housing as well as the normal tourist type accommodation of motels, hotels, caravan parks, cottages & bed & breakfast housing.
I understand that the tenders have to be lodged by July & then an appointment of the contractor will be made soon after.
The project is planned to commence at the end of the year or early 2022.
Given that the South Australian section of the project goes from Robertstown to the border east of Renmark, the contractors have also asked whether the accommodation model developed for the Goyder region can be simulated in the region from Morgan to Paringa. I am in the process of making preliminary enquiries through Regional Development Australia – Murraylands & Riverland, to engage the 4 local councils in this Riverland to assist in this accommodation exercise. These are the Mid-Murray Council, Loxton/Waikerie Council, Berri/Barmera Council & Renmark/Paringa Council.
2 NEOEN – GOYDER RENEWABLES ZONE
I met with the local Community Coordinator, Hannah Willson in early May & had a productive discussion re using local accommodation, business services & labour for up to 300 workers on the project.
David Stevenson, CEO of the Regional Council of Goyder & Bill Gebhardt, councillor of the Regional Council of Goyder, met with senior management of Neoen near Burra on 31 May 2021 to discuss ongoing progress on the project. Neoen are in the process of appointing an EPC contractor, as well as continuing soil testing & then commencing light civil construction work with a planned commencement date at the end of this year.
3 EPS ENERGY – ROBERTSTOWN SOLAR
EPS Energy announced on 4 May 2021 the selection of Amp Energy as the successful development partner to progress the EPS Solar & Storage facility at Robertstown.
EPS Energy will now be progressing the project through to the pre-construction phase with the initial works to include geotechnical investigations, further biodiversity assessment & the completion of heritage studies. Amp Energy says it expects the project to commence “stage energisation” in late 2022, which suggests construction will have to start late this year or early 2022.
I will obtain further updates from the management of the May Bros – Solar River Project, Green Gold Energy – Australia Plains Project and the RES – Twin Creek project for my next full report in August 2021.
The Robertstown Power Sub Station project is now winding down & is expected to be completed by June/July.
The Regional Council of Goyder Website now has a Renewable Energy section under the Development tab. This has been developed recently and includes a summary and links to the various projects as well as my recent Renewables Reports. The link is: www.goyder.sa.gov.au/development/renewables
As the commencement dates of the various projects comes closer, further community advertisements will be circulated to refresh & enlarge the accommodation register that I am maintaining & also to register interest from local residents of the Goyder region as workers on the projects.
The Eudunda Show Committee have been working away quietly already preparing for the 2021 Eudunda Show. One of the early items that the Community can be involved in is to submit a tender to be part of the Eudunda Show and at the same time have the opportunity to raise funds for your club or organisation.
If you are unsure what is involved, why not give our Show Secretary, Mel, a ring and talk with her about what would be involved.

For anyone wondering what the activity was at the Eudunda Caravan Park, over June 11 to 13th it was a control point/sleep station for “The Irrational S.O.U.T.H. (Southern Oz Ultimate Trails & Hills) 200 Miler”. During the time of the event several hundred people were to pass through the district, as they supported the event.
What an amazing challenge this event has been with the 27 runners registering for the event.
Competitors left from Murray Bridge at 7am on June 9th 2021, running to Clare along the Lavender Federation Trail. The trail is the ideal distance being 325Km (pretty much smack on 200 miles).
The event itself had its own trials thanks to COVID-19, as Shaun Kaesler, Event Director telling how this was the third attempt to run the event, and that a third of those who had originally registered this time had to cancel at the last minute due to another COVID outbreak interstate. Shaun also explained that some of the regular field had also been depleted because there was no overseas competitors able to attend.
It should be mentioned that it was expected that the runners would be in the same area around Inspiration Point as the ‘Lew Job 2 Day Reliability Trial held at Robertstown‘ (also reported here). There had been fantastic support from thier organizers, Michael Kerin and Patrick Neal to ensure that both events would protect thier participants. Well done to both for your efforts.
Sunday 13th 2021 was the official end of the Ultra Marathon at Clare, with lots of celebrations.
What is truly amazing is how fast these runners are and how much they must endure. As an indicator in the Womens First Place was Jacqueline Cresp finished with a time of 73 hours 37 min 06 sec. Mens First Place was Kieran O’Brien finished with a time of 52 hours 50 min 01 sec.
Let’s just say again – those times are to travel (running or maybe walking) from Murray Bridge to Clare a distance of 200 Miles or 325 Kilometers, and for anyone who has walked the Lavender Federation Trail is is not all nice level back roads, and the competitors would have found steep hills, an amazing number of creeks, narrow paths, rocks, rabbit and wombat holes and more, much of this would be encountered in the dark. An astounding effort.
We met up with the last runner in the field, Kelly Bennett as she was preparing to leave at approximately 10:30pm from the Eudunda Caravan Park Sleep Station, with her next destination being ‘Inspiration Point Aid Station. Carey Aylmer and Debra Pelgrave were running with Kelly to the next station as part of thier job as ‘Sweeps’.
Kelly may have been the last woman in the field to finish, in 7th place, but she must have made up some very good time as she finished at 98 hours, 3 min and 52 seconds which was only a couple seconds under 5 minutes behind Wilma Mace who finished 6th. A great effort,
In Eudunda there was an extra buzz around the town, as supporters gathered goods, and had a general look around the town.
The South Australian Recreation Trails Inc Board (SARTI) who constructed and maintain the Lavender Federation Trail congratulate each and every competitor, helper and organizer, and once again thank all land owners who generously allow the trail through thier property.
If your child is eligible to start Preschool in 2022 and intends attending the Eudunda Community Preschool Centre please contact Emma Kleinig (Director) ASAP to begin the enrolment process.
