COVID'S IMPACT ON NJ: 1,021,308 CASES & 26,377 DEATHS

Yesterday, state officials reported COVID-19 has spread to 891,483 PCR-confirmed cases, and 129,825 probable cases. It has killed a confirmed 23,687 people. 2,690 people likely died from the virus, though it hasn't been confirmed.

BUDGET DOESN'T INCLUDE LONG-TERM NJ TRANSIT FUNDING

The state budget deadline is imminent, and it still lacks any long-term funding to support NJ Transit. That's “mind-blowing," Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg said. Under Gov. Phil Murphy's budget proposal, the agency would receive $360 million from its capital budget, plus another $82 million from a fund designed to support clean energy projects. (Politico / NJ.com)

LANDLORDS CAN'T ASK RENTERS ABOUT CRIMINAL RECORDS

Gov. Phil Murphy has signed the Fair Chance in Housing Act — and it's the first law of its kind nationwide. The legislation makes it illegal, in most cases, for landlords to ask potential tenants about their criminal history. It's similar to 'ban-the-box' bills in workplaces and college applications. POLL: MOST LIKE MURPHY, MOST DON'T KNOW CIATTARELLI

A new Fairleigh Dickinson University poll took the state's pulse on the upcoming gubernatorial election, which will be held in November. The poll of 803 registered voters found that Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli remains largely unknown to voters. This is how Gov. Phil Murphy is faring now:
  • About 39% disapprove of Gov. Phil Murphy's work
  • About 50% (81% of Democrats, 11% of Republicans) approve of his work

AGE DISCRIMINATION BILL IS NOW ON GOV. MURPHY'S DESK

A bill that is ready to be signed or vetoed by Gov. Phil Murphy aims to protect older adults from age discrimination in the workplace. Under the bill, tenured faculty would no longer be compelled to retire at 70, and employers would be banned from refusing to hire candidates due to their age (over 70). (NJ.com)
