Brothers and Sisters from Afar: Understanding China’s Islamic Diplomacy and its Muslim Minorities in the Southeast Asian Context

In this talk, Dr. Yang Yang examines China’s recent Belt and Road Initiative (the BRI) and their implications to China’s Muslim community and Muslim-majority countries along the routes of the new Silk Road. China engages the cultural imaginaries of the Silk Road in the official narratives, especially the Arab and Persian merchants and adventurers and their long journey across deserted land to China. The Muslim travelers’ admiration of the Chinese civilization and the Chinese empire’s inclusive attitude towards them made some of them to settle in China and became integrated in the local society. In contrast, China’s Muslim minorities, often portrayed as descendants of these early Muslim travelers on the Silk Road, do not share similar experiences.

Salafism and the State: Islamic Activism and National Identity in Contemporary Indonesia by Chris Chaplin is newly published.
This ethnographic study explores the role of Islamic activism amongst Indonesian youth and how it has transformed the country’s religious and political discourse.

"Chaplin’s book presents a superb study of Indonesian Salafism. Rich in narrative detail, acutely observed, theoretically engaged and elegantly written, this is a deeply informative work on an increasingly influential movement within Indonesian Islam."
(Dr Greg Fealy, Australian National University)

The book is available for purchase on the NIAS Press' website.

Future Publication

After several scrupulous checks between the edited text and the Thai original, Thai Politics in Translation: Monarchy, Democracy and the Supra-constitution, by Michael K. Connors and Ukrist Pathmanand is finally set to be out in the beginning of September 2021.

Book Review

Friederike Trotier’s fascinating book Nation, City, Arena: Sports Events, Nation Building and City Politics in Indonesia is reviewed in South East Asia Research

“Using a ‘spatial-geographical’ approach, Trotier has drawn on archival and ethnographic sources to produce a sizeable, balanced and unique set of data that results in a well-substantiated and persuasive argument. … [Some conceptual] limitations should not diminish the larger significance of the book as a well-researched, comprehensive and pioneering work in Indonesian history, the politics of sports, and South East Asian studies. Overall, Nation, City, Arena offers an Asian Games-size account of the politicization of sports and the sportization of politics in our contemporary world”.
- Lou Antolihao (2021): Nation, city, arena: sports events, nation building, and
city politics in Indonesia, South East Asia Research
