In this talk, Dr. Yang Yang examines China’s recent Belt and Road Initiative (the BRI) and their implications to China’s Muslim community and Muslim-majority countries along the routes of the new Silk Road. China engages the cultural imaginaries of the Silk Road in the official narratives, especially the Arab and Persian merchants and adventurers and their long journey across deserted land to China. The Muslim travelers’ admiration of the Chinese civilization and the Chinese empire’s inclusive attitude towards them made some of them to settle in China and became integrated in the local society. In contrast, China’s Muslim minorities, often portrayed as descendants of these early Muslim travelers on the Silk Road, do not share similar experiences.

The Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme is pleased to invite scholars and analysts in your institutions to participate in the Call for Papers: Cities and Climate Challenge in Southeast Asia Workshop and Compendium that will take place virtually between September to October 2021.

Interested candidates are to submit an abstract of 300-500 words to climatechange@iseas.edu.sg with a short bio-data by 25 June 2021. Following a selection process, contributors will be invited to submit their first draft and attend an online workshop to discuss their papers. The compendium will be published in the last quarter of 2021.

The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) is calling for applications for a studentship as part of the Leverhulme Reearch Leadership Award: Mapping Sumatra’s Manuscript Cultures. This project focuses on three case studies: the Palembang royal library, looted by the British in 1812 and by the Dutch in 1821, and dispersed across institutional collections in several countries; the libraries of religious schools in the Minangkabau highlands digitised by the Endangered Archives Programme (EAP 144); and personal libraries from Aceh, again digitised by the EAP (EAP 329).

The Taiwan Fellowship is established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to award foreign experts and scholars interested in researches related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, Asia-Pacific region and Chinese studies to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan.  The Taiwan Fellowship, echoing the APEC Scholarship Initiative, provides 12 Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowship openings per year exclusively for scholars and experts from developing APEC economies. The annual application period is from May 1 to June 30 (for grants for Jan. – Dec. the following year).

The International Conference on Populism in Asia: The Same or Different Story? invites Asia-Pacific experts in the world to get together and exchange their empirical observations and research findings on populism in the Asian-Pacific countries, such as the details of its making, consequences, and implications. The conference intends to draw a comprehensive picture of populism in Asia and construct a comparative framework to contrast the models of populism in different political systems in the Asia-Pacific with the conventional wisdom derived from the West. Papers are now invited from interested scholars for this conference to be convened on 3-4 December 2021 in Hong Kong. Quantitative research based upon innovative data approaches is highly preferred.

At the IT University of Copenhagen, the postdoc will join the active Technologies in Practice research group, one of Scandinavia’s largest interdisciplinary STS environments looking at the intersection of society and IT. They will be responsible for designing an ethnographic study that attends to the making of the SCS as a sociotechnical phenomenon, following technologies, their makers, environments and consequences of use for populations on the move. The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) invites applications for a three-year, full-time position as Doctoral Researcher for the project POPAGANDA: Pop Culture, Art, and Ideas of Legitimacy in Struggles over Democratization and Peace, led by Senior Researcher Marte Nilsen. Working within the field of Humanities or Social Sciences, the Doctoral Researcher to be employed in this project will conduct fieldwork-based research on how indigenous belief systems and cosmologies are utilized in popular culture and art in Myanmar or Thailand, to generate political legitimacy in struggles over democratization and peace. The work conducted here will result in a PhD dissertation in English.
