A NOTE
FROM YOUR ED

I hope this second quarter finds you well.

Summer has fully arrived here in the northern hemisphere. Harvest is underway, and in some cases, completed in much of the Eastern and Southern US. Additionally, the vaccine rollout and declining case numbers, seem to be reinvigorating business for our partners in the craft beer and spirits space. All in all, it feels like things are may I say cautiously looking up. And, here at Craft Maltsters Guild headquarters, we’re busier than ever. I’m excited to bring you a new newsletter chock-full of exciting updates and top-notch, malty content.

First, some exciting news, the Guild website now has a shiny, hip new look thanks to the folks at Asheville, NC-based web developers, Integritive. If you haven’t visited www.craftmalting.com lately, now is the time to check it out (and please DO let us know what you think!)

Secondly, mark your calendars! Planning for the 2022 Craft Malt Conference is underway! We are anxious to bring our craft malt family back together. Two years is far too long to wait! The event will convene on  February 18-19, 2022 in Portland, ME and, new for 2022, it will be a hybrid experience with both in-person and virtual attendance options offered. Learn more about what we have planned here.

In this issue, President Brent Manning gives an update on the array of projects Guild working groups currently have in motion. We introduce you to 2021 Soles of Malt Award recipient, Dr. Paul Schwarz, Professor of Malting Barley Quality at North Dakota State University and a 45-year veteran of the North American malting barley industry. Additionally, the 2021 Malt Cup winners share their pro tips for making the best malt possible. Lastly, we announce the official launch of MaltVis, a new online malt data analysis app designed by Admiral Maltings and offered in partnership with the Guild free of charge to the greater craft malt community.

Wrapping up, I leave you with a few small requests:

  1. Guild Members: I want to hear from you! If you haven’t yet, please respond to our 2021 General Membership Survey. Your feedback helps us do a better job at serving you and providing you with a valuable, meaningful membership experience!

  2. Going to CBC in Denver this coming September? Email me to let me know! We could use your help at the Guild’s trade show booth (#4909)! We’re also requesting malt samples to use in hot steep malt sensory demos we’ll be doing throughout the three-day event.

  3. Malt for Brewers Workshop (August 9-10 in Bozeman, MT)

    • Maltsters, we’d love your help spreading the word about this exciting new educational offering to your brewery customers. Share this link!

    • Brewers, consider attending! Spots are still available but limited so register soon!

Now, enjoy the newsletter and have a great summer!

Cheers,
Jesse Bussard

CALL FOR SAMPLES

The Craft Maltsters Guild will be exhibiting during the 2021 Craft Brewers Conference & Brew America Trade Show scheduled to happen in Denver in early September. During the CBC trade show, we will be doing hot steep demos (social distance practices in place) and offering tasting flights of regional malts to feature the unique diversity of Craft Malt. Five (5) tastings are planned across the three-day conference and trade show covering 5 different continental regions. For each demonstration, we hope to find three (3) volunteer malthouses willing to provide a malt and a bit of detail about their malthouse and their malt for a tasting card. Our tentative regions include the Northeast, Southeast, the Midwest, Northwest, and the Southwest areas of North America.

Conference goers will get wort samples as well as a small portion of the whole malt to consider. We will showcase malts from the first three volunteer malthouses from each region - so if you are interested in participating please don't hesitate!

What we need:  2lbs of your selected malt sent to Montana State University no later than August 1, 2021.

Please click the link below to register, review sample submission guidelines, and provide further details about your malt sample and malthouse.
