Congratulations to Romana who won over 320 votes from Sir John Hunt students in the recent UK Youth Parliament elections. Her campaign promised a higher degree of focus on mental health provision for young people, a focus on removing the stigma that young students asking for help with their mental health sometimes feel and a greater encouragement of young people signing up for enrichment activities . She came across extremely well in her online video and we eagerly wait to see how the votes come in across other Plymouth schools. Well done Romana, we are really proud of you.

Four students in Year 7 had been selected to go on a trip for the day to Plymouth University, to explore subjects in Mathematics that are beyond the classroom. 

These students were Lewis, Evie, Emily and Ryan. The students studied Polyhedrons, Flexagons, and touched on Topology. They were particularly amazed about the Flexagons as they were like magic tricks! They were also amazed that a doughnut is mathematical to a mug, which if they went to study Mathematics at University, they could prove this. The Möbias Strip was another activity that the students enjoyed. All of the students were buzzing with excitement after the day and said it was fantastic. 

Throughout the day, the students engagement and behaviour was outstanding. If you see them around the College, please congratulate them on their exceptional behaviour and involvement on this trip.

Talented Year 12 music students have been selected to take part in Interact, a creative music project coordinated by the Arts Council (England) and various music hubs, including Plymouth Music Education Hub.

The competition involves students writing and performing their own music and then taking part in a series of live showcases in our city centre. Amazingly, this leads to a large scale concert at Plymouth Pavilions on 26 March 2020, where bands will perform their music alongside a super sized youth orchestra made up of players from across Devon and Cornwall.

On 10 December 2019, Year 12 had a fantastic night showcasing their original music, together with future success stories from Year 9 and Year 11.

We are immensely proud of Lexi Taylor and Monty from Year 9, the youngest students by far; Daisy  and Megan from Year 11 and our entry for the competition from our Year 12 band Entropy, made up of Mckenzie, Kaitlyn, Emma, Ellie and Dora.

Our students are pictured here, together with Sixth Form students from Lipson Co-operative Academy. Year 12 enter the next round in the competition on 10 March, 2020.

Our fantastic students at Nurture Group have had specialised music sessions, run by our very own music department.

The students have been focusing on building friendships and confidence through music. As well as this, we have been learning how having a hobby can help with mental and social well-being.

There has been an improvement in student's ability to communicate, contribute to a team and of course musical aptitude. Many of our students now want to take up an instrument for a hobby and have been attending music club after school and during lunch times.

The sessions have been fun, beneficial and successful. This would not have been possible if it was not for Macaulay, who kindly ran the sessions for us, big thanks go to you! Also, thanks to Mr Cleverley and Amelia for their assistance.

KS3 Learning Mentor

On Friday 6th December our Year 7 students gathered together in the performance hall for Sir John Hunt’s annual Singing for Schools event. Accompanying them was a selected group of talented Year 9, with solos from Maddy Stanton and Tallulah Buckeridge.

The day was run by Jenny Cleverley who heads up Singing for Schools, with support from Mr Cleverley and his team of music volunteers.

It was a large scale singing masterclass in which our students learnt a plethora of new songs at the same time as acquiring and applying a range of singing techniques.

The musical genres stretched from the gentle piano version Oasis’ ‘Half A World Away’, to powerful, upbeat songs from 'The Greatest Showman'. There was also room for some pop classics such as Beyonce’s ‘Runnin’ and Pink’s ‘What About Us’, which our students have been learning to play in their music lessons.

At the end of the day, all the hard work our students put into rehearsals was showcased to over a 100 excited parents. Every single student involved gave their best performance and sang their hearts out.

It was a fantastic day for everyone involved. My thanks go to all the staff who supported the day, especially our music team, to our incredible Year 7 students and to our audience of proud parents, grandparents and other guests which gave the final showcase that extra sense of occasion.
