Best in the Northwest!

Roosevelt Regional Landfill

The Roosevelt Regional Landfill Management Plan is designed to exceed Federal New Source Performance Standards and Emission Guidelines for Municipal Solid Waste Landfills.  The landfill gas and collection system consist of vertical extraction wells and horizontal trenches, a gas condensate knockout system, motor blowers, an enclosed landfill gas combustor and a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility.

Republic Services has installed more wells than required in order to capture the maximum amount of gas generated.

A combination of vertical and horizontal collectors is utilized for landfill gas collection enabling the site to capture over 95-percent of all gas produced and over 50-percent of the gas is energy-rich methane. The gas extraction system is monitored for pressure, gas flow, and gas quality at various points in the extraction system. Gas can be delivered to flares for prescribed maintenance if necessary, however 100-percent of the gas is piped to the Renewable Natural Gas facility operated by Public Utility District (PUD) No. 1 of Klickitat County, coverts Landfill Gases to Renewable Natural Gas. This RNG facility is the largest in the United States and arguably the most technologically advanced facility of its kind. RNG produced from the facility is distributed for use in communities throughout Western Washington State and British Columbia jurisdictions through the Williams Northwest Pipeline.

The volume of energy produced at the facility is the equivalent of 18 million gallons of gasoline annually.

Republic In Tests To Electrify Its Trucking Fleet

Public policy makers in Canada and the US have been enthusiastic about encouraging and embracing electric vehicle technology, with Canada offering subsidies for those buying or leasing new zero-emission vehicles, and the Biden administration pledging to electrify the entire federal fleet.

In January 2021 Republic and battery maker Romeo Power announced a strategic alliance agreement that will see two Republic Services refuse collection vehicles being retrofitted with electric motors and Romeo battery packs. More broadly, the companies will collaborate to determine key performance metrics going forward for Romeo's technology in Republic's fleet which represents approximately 16,000 vehicles. Goals for 2021 and beyond include achieving a 15-minute charge time and the ability to drive 500 miles on a single charge. About 20 minutes for a fast charge is already possible, Romeo indicates.

The waste industry is seeing an acceleration in piloting and R&D partnership activity between incumbents, established public and private companies and start-ups. Because of that, the more solutions there are, the quicker the adoption curve will be for commercial fleets like Republic’s.

UBC scientists develop a biodegradable face mask

A team of Canadian scientists at the University of British Columbia has developed a biodegradable face mask using natural cellulosic fibres and nano-materials made from wood-based products.

The Can Mask, developed at the BioProducts Institute, matches the performance of disposable polypropylene masks but is much safer for the environment, according to its creators.

As part of UBC’s Faculty of Applied Science, the BioProducts Institute develops ways to use renewable resources existing in nature as alternative solutions to fossil fuel derived materials.

Recycled Plastics Manufacturing Stimulus Fund Awarded

Turning Used Plastic into New Opportunity

Recognizing the rapid growth of the use of plastics in manufacturing and the need to address plastic waste, the BC government has invested $5 million to encourage innovative technologies turn used plastics into new products, support the circular economy for plastics and increase local processing capacity for recycling and create new jobs. The funded projects will replace or recycle over 20,000 tonnes of plastic per year.

Turning plastics from old car batteries into new ones, developing artificial intelligence to sort plastics for recycling and supporting local micro-recycling facilities are among nine projects being funded under the CleanBC Plastics Action Fund.

Stimulus fund recipients include Merlin Plastics – Delta where funding will support upgrading equipment to increase the supply of PCR plastic to be used as feedstock in new food-grade packaging by increasing the capacity to process recycled polyethylene and improving the quality of polypropylene; and Recycling Alternative – Vancouver that has a highly localized urban solution for processing PCR plastic in Vancouver and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with transporting waste. This funding will increase its capacity to both sort and process plastic, enabling the creation of more high-quality PCR plastic to be used in local manufacturing. Recycling Alternative has strong hiring for diversity and is a partner in the Indigenous Recycling Employment Entry Program.

Recovering the Momentum of Reusables in Retail

A Webinar From National Zero Waste Council

Reusable products, like bags, mugs and containers, are valuable assets in waste prevention and circular economy strategies. As businesses move forward from the COVID-19 pandemic, these products can replace wasteful single use items. At this webinar, hear perspectives from public health researchers and retail and food manufacturing representatives on the opportunities to reintroduce and accelerate the use of reusables in retail settings.

The webinar will unpack the recently released report, Opportunities for Reusables in Retail Settings during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Canada*, analyzing this topic with the report's researchers from the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health. The National Zero Waste Council provided funding towards this research which provides a science-based understanding of the potential risks of virus transmission though reusables.
