Super guarantee rate rising from 9.5% to 10% on 1 July 2021

For salary and wage payments made on or after 1 July 2021, the minimum superannuation guarantee contribution rate of 10% will need to be applied. It’s important that you pay your workers the correct amount of super.

How to pay your workers the correct amount of super

The ATO have released tools to help employers do this, including:
  • How much super: Use ATO’s super guarantee contributions calculator to work out how much super to pay employees after the rate increase.
  • Employee eligibility: Use ATO’s superannuation guarantee eligibility decision tool to determine if your employees, including any contractors treated as employees for super purposes, are eligible for super.
  • The super rate is scheduled to progressively increase to 12% by July 2025.
Actions for your business
  • Update your payroll and accounting systems to incorporate the super rate increase.
  • Ensure you’re aware of additional superannuation related increases, including:
  • Concessional contributions cap
  • Excess concessional contribution charge
  • Non-concessional contributions cap
  • CGT cap amount.

Are you ready for the ban on single-use plastic items?

As part of Queensland’s plan to tackle plastic waste, the Queensland Government is banning single-use plastic straws, stirrers, plates, bowls, cutlery, and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers and cups.

The ban starts on 1 September 2021 and applies to all Queensland not-for-profit organisations and businesses. Except those businesses which are exempt so they can continue to support people with disability or healthcare needs.

You are encouraged to identify whether banned items still need to be provided to customers, and if so, what they can be replaced with. If you have excess stock, you may also wish to contact your supplier to understand their returns policy.

The National Retail Association has been appointed to work with businesses to ensure they understand the ban and what they must do to comply, as well as options to manage excess stock. Visit the National Retail Association website for more information or call their Hotline on 1800 844 946.

In addition, Boomerang Alliance has been appointed to engage with not-for-profit organisations and is holding information sessions across the state. Find out more including the dates and locations on the Boomerang Alliance website.

To find out more about the ban visit www.qld.gov.au/plasticsban or watch this video.
