SORA & Public Library CONNECT

Sora, the student reading app
If one thing stood out during this pandemic, it’s that digital resources are critical to serving our Yakima Valley Libraries’ patrons. We recognize that as educators continue to seek more creative ways to support students’ learning, a key resource for schools is the local public library. Thanks to new partnerships with several area schools, YVL is doing just that. Through Sora, the student reading app created by OverDrive and named one of TIME’s Best Inventions in 2019, students of partner schools can borrow from both their school’s collection of classroom and pleasure reading titles as well as from YVL’s kids and/or teen digital collections. Students can easily log into the library’s digital collection through Sora using their school credentials/student ID rather than needing a separate library card. Ask at your school or local YVL library for help setting up your Sora app today. And if your school doesn’t subscribe to OverDrive (or you’re no longer school age), come by your local library. We can get you started.

Yakima Valley Reads

"The Rose Code" by Kate Quinn; Join the Yakima Valley this fall as we read Kate Quinn's bestselling historical fiction novel.
This is it! It’s finally here! Just the announcement you have been waiting for. The 2021 Yakima Valley Reads title is…drum roll please…The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. A propulsive WWII story set at Bletchley Park where three quarters of the agents were women working around the clock decoding the enemy’s secret messages. Want to know more about this incredible war effort? Check out our Britannica Library and simply search “Bletchley Park” for loads of information, images and videos that will help bring the setting to life.

Local & Regional Author Collection

As November is National Novel Writing Month, I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about our Local & Regional Author Collection (LRAC) and perhaps inspire all those writers out there to take the leap this November. The LRAC, shelved in a special location at our Yakima Central Library, highlights recent works written by authors living in our region. If you can’t make it in to browse the collection, you can request any of them through our online catalog and pick them up at any of our libraries for your reading pleasure. With NaNoWriMo and all its resources behind them, many aspiring writers enter the month as elementary school teachers, mechanics, or stay-at-home parents. They leave novelists. Maybe this year it’ll be you!
