Dear Service Design Insider,

Let’s take a deep breath! The pandemic that ravaged our world last year taught us more than ever that the choices we make determine the reality that we experience. As designers and business leaders, we need to be more mindful of the ripple effects of our decisions - both intended and unintended. When designing for services, we should be less human- and more life-centred. This is what the Service Design Global Conference 2021 will be all about. Make sure to be a part of it! ‘’Taking a Stand’’ will be the theme of the Service Design Global Conference on October 21-22, 2021 (save the date!).

We look forward to seeing you in our virtual conference space!

Early bird registration will open in July. In the meantime, sign up for our conference newsletter to be updated on event announcements!

Happy reading, service designers! ✨

Warmest regards,

Prof. Birgit Mager (she/her)
SDN Co-founder and President

Being a Trans Ally: How To Add Your Pronouns

In recognition of Pride Month, we at the SDN are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the great work our community is doing within this space, as demonstrated by the work of our very own SDN DEI Taskforce, Natalie Kuhn (she/her) and Max Masure (they/them).

So you've heard of the concept of "adding your pronouns" and want to learn more. Like many of us, you've probably wondered what it meant, why folks keep bringing it up, and finally, how you should "add your pronouns"? Where? When? Online? Within a verbal introduction? Read this article to learn the how vs. the why behind adding pronouns while touching a bit about the concept's history.

Why We Should Consider Frameworks in Service Design

One of the critical reasons projects adopt frameworks is that frameworks align the disparate efforts into a cohesive whole and are also aspirational & directional. Additionally, a framework provides structure, a frame of reference (Merriam-Webster), instead of a particular set of procedures or body of methods, commonly known as a methodology (Merriam-Webster).

Service Prototyping

The challenge for a Service Designer is to ensure that stakeholders can see the value of the service experience that has been designed. When orchestrating an entire service that comprises multiple touchpoints, key stakeholders cannot visualize the service experience.

SDN Academy

Qualitative research is a methodology used to gather objective and unbiased insights from a specific group to understand a problem or issue better, ideate a new concept, or expand upon an existing opportunity. The process seeks to tap into the human side of the equation and do one-on-one interviews, observations, questionnaires, focus groups, etc. And while you may feel confident in your knowledge of the assets needed to conduct such research, have you asked yourself if you truly understand the psychological basics, methods and tools that will help you increase the quality of your activities?

Read this SDN Academy Blog Post: "Taking a Deep Dive into Qualitative Research with Dr. Tina Weisser" and learn more about our upcoming course "User Research Masterclass - The Art of Asking" with Dr. Tina Weisser on July 20 and July 27, 2021!
