MID-SEASON TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT DAY IN JULY
On the 11th of July, NSWISA will host its Mid-Season T&D Day at Erina Ice Arena. We are extremely excited to bring some fresh faces to NSWISA T&D and share exposure to coaches who are achieving fantastic results with their skaters to the broader NSWISA community. The day includes 3 hours of ice time and a presentation from Dr Juanita Weissensteiner from the NSW Office of Sport. Juanita will delve into the subject of self regulation and will provide participants with practical skills and strategies that will greatly assist their performance. Ice time will include spins, jumps, edges and moves in the field sessions under the instruction of Linda and Pavel Aubrecht, Kara Burrows and Bradley McLachlan. The day will be begin at 2:30 for Aussie Skate and 3:30 for other divisions. This is a great opportunity for skaters to hone their skills with experienced coaches and gain practical skills with an expert on performance. Coaches may also attend if they are members of NSWISA. The cost for this day is $60 for all participants (skaters and coaches). Don't delay and register now!
Linda Aubrecht has been coaching for 30 years, for a short time in Canberra and Taiwan, but mostly out of Penrith.  Linda trained at the highest level in both ice dance and singles skating before turning professional and travelling with Holiday On Ice for 8 years.
Linda is the coach of 3 Theatre on Ice teams as well as numerous singles skaters of all ages.  She loves choreography, edges and expression through movement most in skating.
Pavel Aubrecht was former Czech national representative in Ice Dance, turned professional skater in shows of Holiday on Ice and Dancing on Ice for over 12 years. Pavel started coaching alongside his competitive skating in Prague, continued as a team coach in Salzburg and then in Australia, at Penrith and Liverpool, amounting to 30 years of coaching experience.
Pavel has coached on several international skating camps in Czech Republic. He loves the group training atmosphere and enjoys creating drills for students.
Kara Burrows has coached in Australia and has 20 years experience in the sport. Kara is a coach at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium and is proud to have coached both State and National Champions. Kara has extensive experience in choreography and has a passion for sharing her knowledge with her skaters.
Brad McLachlan was an international representative and has performed in ice shows internationally. A Level 1 coach, Brad has transitioned from skater to coach and continually strives to improve his coaching knowledge and provides a positive environment for his skaters to thrive.
Prior to her appointment as the Principal Advisor of Pathways for the NSW Office of Sport, Dr Juanita Weissensteiner was the National Manager of the Athlete Pathways and Development section at the Australian Institute of Sport. Juanita is an original co-author of the FTEM (Foundation, Talent, Elite, Mastery) Athlete Development Framework and was a co-contributor to the 2015 published International Olympic Committee's consensus statement on Youth Athlete Development.
Utilising an evidence-based, practical and holistic approach, Juanita continues to provide advice at all levels of sport including an international level.
PPC SUBMISSION PROCESS REMINDER
All levels of IJS competitions are required to submit PPCs for their programs. Below is a reminder of the process as there has been a considerable increase in the number of errors being made when submitting PPCs. These errors have resulted in additional admin for our hard working volunteers. Some common errors are listed below and are not just limited to our new and emerging skaters:
  • Free Skate elements submitted under Short Program elements or vice versa
  • Elements written out in full instead of using the abbreviations (Element abbreviations are listed on our website)
  • Spaces between each element - there should not be any spaces
SUBMITTING YOUR PPC
Skaters doing a Free Skate Program please enter the elements in the FS Element section. Those doing a Short Program please enter the elements in the SP Element section. In Singles & Pairs, the only skaters to do a Short Program are Advanced Novice, Junior and Senior levels. For Synchronized Skating, only Junior & Senior Teams complete both programs. For Ice Dance, please enter Rythm Dance elements in the SP Elements section and Free Dance elements in the Free Skate Elements section.

ELEMENT ABBREVIATION LIST
This is for all levels of skaters from Preliminary to Senior, Adults, Ice Dance, Pairs and Synchro. The Element Abbreviation List can be found here or on our website.

CHECK BEFORE SUBMITTING
Before hitting the submit button, all skaters/parents/coaches are asked to check the submitted list of PPCs and make sure the elements are listed correctly. Please write exactly as shown on the Element Abbreviation List. Please do not write the elements by their full name as these will be rejected by the system.

SPACING BETWEEN ELEMENTS
There are NO spaces between elements and the abbreviations should be correct. eg. 1F+1Lo: not 1F + 1L, 2Lo+2T not 2LO + 2T.

JUMPS
Every jump has a number in front of it to indicate whether it is a single, double, triple or quadruple jump: eg. 1A is Single Axel, 2A is Double Axel, 3A is Triple Axel. You do not need to add +COMBO at the end of the combination jumps. A jump followed by an Axel at the end can have +SEQ added eg. 1Lz+1A+SEQ.

SPINS, STEPS & CHOREO SEQUENCES
Spins and Step or Choreo Sequences do not have a number after them. A number is given by the Technical Panel when the program is performed and may be different each time, depending on the execution.

SPECIAL CODES
The list of Special Codes on the last page of the Element Abbreviations is to show what is meant when these are added by the Technical Panel when the program is performed and may be different each time depending on execution. These are not codes that should be added when submitting your PPC.

For those "first-timers", we understand that your initial foray into the mysteries of the PPC can be a little daunting, but do feel free to contact Admin if you are unsure or discuss with the coach - you will soon get the hang of it.
WELCOMING BACK HOLLINS TROPHY TO THE NSWISA CALENDAR
Congratulations to all who competed at the 2021 Hollins Trophy at Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink on Saturday 12th, Sunday 13th & Monday 14th of June. 2020 saw the competition cancelled as rinks were closed, so it was exciting to have this ISA Benchmark competition back on the NSWISA Calendar for 2021. It was disappointing that we had many withdrawals due to the situation in Victoria, and it was a real reminder how lucky we are to be able to continue doing what we love.
Congratulations to the Organising Committee at Sydney Figure Skating Club, and again, a big thank you to our Officials (NSWISA & Interstate) who continue to contribute to our sport in such an invaluable way.

WHAT'S NEW WITH ISU!
ISU has updated its Guidelines for International Novice Competitions with Communication 2396. For Basic Novice and Intermediate Novice, the technical requirements have changed stating "Only one single jump and one double jump (including Double Axel) can be repeated once". The ISU Communication can be viewed here.
ISA AGM
On Saturday 29th May, NSWISA Delegates attended the ISA AGM. This meeting was unfortunately changed from an in person event to online on the Thursday prior as a result of the Covid outbreak in Victoria. Reports were received as part of the normal AGM and from ISA's Operational Directors. 2020 was obviously an interesting year for our sport and NSWISA thanks the ISA Team for the work they put into the sport. Arguably the best initiative to come out of this meeting was the ability for Elementary skaters to achieve Level 2 calls for their spins and step sequences. Many skaters in this level are capable of achieving Level 2 spins and it will be nice to see these be rewarded. In regards to the step sequences, it was felt that the emphasis needs to be on the quality of the element and hence clusters will not be counted as features in this element at the Elementary level. All States were excited by this proposal and felt it was a step in the right direction to progress skating in Australia. This is a great update to the rules being made by ISA and we congratulate them on this development. Please stay tuned for the official communication from ISA regarding this.
BOARD MATTERS
The Board met on June 1 and has committed to revising the Strategic Plan to align with the outcomes of the Strategy Meeting was held in January this year. The Organisation undertook a State Sporting Organisation Health Survey conducted by the Office of Sport and the results were presented to the Board. The overall rating for the organisation was 92.8% which is an improvement on previous years. There are 6 key indicators of the survey (Governance, Financial Management, Leadership, Culture & Integrity, Strategy & Planning, Delivery, Risk Management & Accountability) and NSWISA was given the rating of "Outstanding organisational health".
2 x $25 VOUCHERS TO BE USED AT RINKS FOR ADULTS
The NSW Government has launched Dine & Discover NSW to encourage the community to get out and about, supporting dining, arts and tourism businesses and stimulating spending in the economy.
NSW residents aged 18 years and over can apply for 2 x $25 Discover NSW Vouchers. These can be used at recreation facilities such as ice rinks. The vouchers have been extended to be valid until 31 July 2021.
Be sure to contact the rink prior to attending to confirm whether the rink is accepting the vouchers.
VOLUNTEERING
No event can be held without the efforts of our volunteers. Through volunteering, our skating families are able to connect with others who share the same interest and passion for the sport. We are fortunate that we have a very dedicated volunteer group, however, we are always looking for more volunteers to ease the workload of our regular volunteers at events. NSWISA requires its volunteers to have a WWCC number to ensure that our sport is prioritising the safety of our young people. A WWCC number lasts for a period of 5 years and can be applied for at Service NSW.
In order to verify the status of a volunteer, the organising committees will need the surname, the WWCC number and the date of birth of each volunteer. Having this information handy will make the preparations much easier for the organisers of events and will ensure that our sport will be providing a safe environment for our skaters.
