Our latest news updates

This year's Cannes Film Festival includes a strong selection of Scottish films and filmmakers. Scotland-based Director Mark Cousins will have two films screening at the festival: The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, which received Screen Scotland funding, and The Story of Film: A New Generation. Congratulations to a further three Scotland-based filmmakers, Bob Last (She Will), Ruth Paxton (A Banquet) and Martyn Robertson (Ride the Wave), who debuted their new films as part of this year’s Cannes GREAT8 Showcase.

It has been announced that a second season of Amazon Original Series hit Good Omens (Series 2) will shoot in locations across Scotland from this summer. The significant production from Amazon Studios will see Scottish actor David Tennant and Michael Sheen returning to their roles in the six-part series. The series will launch exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and around the world.

Film Access Scotland has announced the launch of the Climate Challenge: 1.5 Degree Films project with the support of Screen Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful. The challenge will invite individuals of all ages, abilities and filmmaking experience to create 90 second short films in response to climate change which will be screened around this November’s COP26 in Glasgow. Full details about the challenge will be announced July 2021. 

This month saw the launch of new short filmmaking programme Little Pictures from GMAC Film. The micro-budget short film project is open to everyone over 16 years of age from under-represented backgrounds, providing training, mentoring and support to create their first film. Little Pictures will commission up to 8 short films from new filmmakers across Scotland. Apply by 30 June via their online application form.

Industry Opportunities

The newly announced Script Starter programme from EIFF is open for applications. This new screenwriting initiative aims to give under-represented writers from across Scotland the opportunity to develop their skills and move forward in their film careers. Apply on the Script Starter website by 7 July.

Netflix are offering a step-up programme for assistant production accountants which will include mentoring, 12-24 months placements on their shows, and training in different aspects of production accounting. If you are interested, send your CV and a covering letter explaining why you think you would be perfect for this opportunity to stepping-up-pf-uk@netflix.com along with your availability.
 

BAFTA Breakthrough UK are on the lookout for the next generation of creative talent working in Scottish film, games and television, identifying excellent individuals who have had a breakthrough year in the industry. Apply or recommend an applicant by visiting the BAFTA Breakthrough UK website.
 
Submissions for the 2022 Glasgow Film Festival are now open. The festival celebrates every corner of world cinema and provides a fantastic showcase for the best of Scottish film. Perfectly placed in March 2022 for spring and summer releases, GFF has launched some of the best new films to the UK's film press and cinema market. Research Updates

There is one day left to apply for Raising Films' HOW WE WORK NOW survey which asks: what do you need as a parent/carer working in the UK screen industries? This solutions oriented survey is open to anyone who works or has worked in the UK screen sector while being a parent and/or carer for family members and/or friends. Results will be published in September 2021.
 

The Wonderworks have launched the Keeping Families in Film campaign to help achieve greater equality within the film industry through tackling the issue of childcare. Help aid The WonderWorks’ research and development by providing feedback, allowing them to create products and services that are most needed by parents in the industry.  

Screen Shout-out

Fast and Furious 9 (F9) hit UK cinemas last week, with the latest instalment of the saga featuring the historic streets of Edinburgh  as a backdrop for some major action sequences. With support from Screen Scotland, several scenes from the big budget Hollywood blockbuster were shot in the capital’s Old and New towns in 2019. 

Environmentally focused film events to check out

With this month's launch of the environmentally focused 1.5 Degree Films project, we have pulled together a short selection of additional environmentally focussed festivals and projects that are paving the way for a more sustainable world.
 
The Youth Climate Film Project (YCFP) is an initiative delivered by Keep Scotland Beautiful with funding from the Scottish Government and The National Lottery through Screen Scotland. The aim of the YCFP is to help young people understand the way that climate change will shape their future and to give them the encouragement to use their voice to enable change.
 
Take One Action nurtures communal exploration of the stories, ideas and questions at the heart of positive social change. Through film screenings, conversation and enquiry, Take One Action brings people together to inspire a more sustainable and more fulfilling world, in Scotland and beyond.
 
The Climate Crisis Film Festival is the UK's only film festival dedicated to channelling constructive action towards the climate emergency. The festival encourages collective action through a carefully selected programme of films, talks, workshops, and events hosted in collaboration with a network of local and global action groups.
