July update from Greater Manchester Ageing Hub

This July, our city-region has come out of some most stringent lockdown restrictions. At the GM Ageing Hub we've been working across Age-friendly Greater Manchester to support the transition into this new phase. Our Age-Friendly GM wider team continues to meet weekly, and next week we'll be focusing on the challenges and solutions around the easing of restrictions. Please get in touch, if you'd like to be part of the conversation.

Over the last month, there's been a real buzz around movement in Greater Manchester. From joining colleagues in Tameside for
Couch to Out and About, to developing our Ageing Well programme at our Executive Group and celebrating great media coverage on active ageing. We're excited to be working to enable culture change and system re-design to create the conditions for Active Ageing and equalities in Greater Manchester.

Earlier this month our strategic partners the Centre for Ageing Better released their
10 year strategy for localities and place-based working to improve later lives. Here in Greater Manchester, we're excited to continue to benefit from Ageing Betters' development of ideas, case studies and ambition in the work that we do together.

Over the next month, we'll be having more exciting conversations with partners about plans for International Day of Older Persons (1 October) - Older and Greener: Tackling the climate emergency together. If you would like to talk to us about collaborating on the campaign,
we'd love to hear from you!

As always, we thank you for your continued support.

International Day of Older Persons 2021 - Older and Greener: Tackling the climate emergency together

Every year, Greater Manchester join our fellow members of the UK Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities to mark UN's International Day of Older People (IDOP) on 1 October.

This year we are excited to be working on the IDOP theme of climate emergency.

In the coming weeks we will be having conversations with older people's groups, local authorities, partner organisations and colleagues working on the Green agenda in Greater Manchester; to coordinate a city-region wide campaign.

If you would like to have a conversation about sharing existing materials around older adults and climate emergency, or would like to get in touch about creating something new for the campaign- please
get in touch.

Covid-19 makes ageing without children “a lonely place to be”

A report released today by the charity Ageing Without Children highlights just how invisible people ageing without children feel, and how for many this feeling of social exclusion has increased during the pandemic when the situation and experiences of people living without family or familial support were not reflected in government messaging, policy statements or the media.

Earlier this week, Manchester Evening News published an article sharing ideas of small daily adjustments that older adults can make to support living happy and healthy lives for longer.

Working with our partners at GM Moving, the article states that looking after our physical health, mental health and social wellbeing becomes even more important as we age.

The article features interviews with older adults from across Greater Manchester, who shared what they're doing to become more active and the great benefits that they're reaping.

Coping with lockdown easing

As restrictions are lifted, life is expected to return to “normal”. And while this is a positive step in the right direction, for many it will feel quite scary – and that’s understandable. It’s perfectly natural to feel anxious and it’s important to know you’re not alone. There’s no right or wrong way to feel.

Radio resource: M4d Radio

M4d Radio was launched in June 2020 by Music for Dementia specifically for people living with dementia and their carers’. A direct response to the cessation of live music performances and isolation due to the pandemic, it offers era-specific music 24/7 straight to people’s homes. In addition to the playlists, the Music for Dementia and m4d Radio team has created a handy ‘5 ways to use music’ guide with how-to tips especially for carers. It explains how listeners and carers can use music to change mood, physically connect, create conversation, encourage exercise and movement, and make new memories. Practical tips include information on volume and hearing, timing, personal care and routine.

Age-friendly Greater Manchester

Each week, GM Ageing Hub bring together a wide range of practitioners, researchers and academics, alongside the ten locality leads and representation from the GM Older People’s Network. We aim to grow the movement of age-friendly system leaders working at all levels of the system, geography, communities and organisations in Greater Manchester to deliver Age-Friendly Greater Manchester.

Earlier this month at our Age friendly GM wider team meeting, we welcomed Polly Kaiser, Consultant Clinical Psychologist Oldham, Older People’s Mental Health lead for the community mental health transformation in Greater Manchester (and more!). Polly presented on Greater Manchester Community Mental Health Transformation and the impact of covid on the work.
