Superintendent's Memo

Happy Monday, Team!!!

FYI - We are not leading the Walk ‘n Roll Challenge anymore - Walk ‘n Roll. I hope you are continuing to take care of yourself and enjoying some sunshine. June is a long month and you do need to take some breaks.

As National Indigenous Peoples Day approaches and we celebrate National Indigenous History Month, here is a link for reference material as Senator Murray Sinclair answers the question "Why can't you just get over it?" In response to former Senator Lynn Beyak's remarks on a couple of platforms she had.

There are also some great reference materials available that are listed below.
  • 21 You may not know about the Indian Act - Bob Joseph

  • Inconvenient Indian - Thomas King

  • Clearing the Plains - James Daschuk

I encourage you to refer to the Truth and Reconciliation: Commission of Canada: Calls to Action Document. We should all reflect on the TRC’s Calls to Action that we are able to work on professionally.

I also thank you for your work with diversity and inclusion. This is Pride Month and some of you have been working with student groups to promote awareness and celebrate diversity. There are resources and websites available to support your work in this area as well. The ATA site has support information. If schools do not have a GSA there is access to online GSA here:

Thank you for all that you do!

Enjoy the week!

Take care,
Rhae-Ann

National Steam Summer Camp 2021

As the end of the school year approaches and kids and parents alike prepare for the summer break, IBM would like to invite you to send out to your principals and or teachers directly an opportunity to provide their students with the option to participate in a no charge National Experience virtual STEAM camp hosted on WebEx from July 19th to 23rd.

These fun and engaging sessions will take place through a virtual National STEAM Summer camp, which will be hosted on WebEx for the week of July 19th-23rd.  Each day will dedicate a few hours in which IBM and other partners will facilitate fun and interactive activities such as digital art, building chatbots, creative technical writing, cyber security, making ice cream, and lots more. All students, entering grades 7-12, will have the option to choose from a variety of sessions and will be able to choose to attend as many as they would like. Each activity will have recommended ages and supplies required (where applicable).

We encourage your district to consider identifying any student who you believe can benefit from participating in this National Summer Camp. Attached you will find a Flyer with simple registration and also a Parent guide that can easily be included in a school newsletter or website for quick distribution to parents and students and for any questions they may have. Together, we can inspire a future generation of students to embrace STEAM.
