It shouldn’t be the norm!

Dear Parents/Carers

I am sure many of you will have seen the news headlines this week prompted by Ofsted’s rapid review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges. A summary can be found online at the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-57411363

This is not a subject that we have ever shied away from at John Hanson and indeed, it forms part of our PSHE programme and has recently been a topic for all year groups in assembly. However, we know we can do more.

While much of what is outlined and highlighted in the report goes on outside of school, schools have a role to play in protecting children and supporting them in order that they can make appropriate and informed choices and decisions.

Within the report there is a significant emphasis on the role online content plays in the prevalence and normalisation of sexual harassment and abuse amongst teenagers. With this in mind, I am revisiting the school’s policy in regard to mobile phones.

I have always been of the view that education is better than sanction, and as such, have not wanted John Hanson to be a school that bans mobile phones totally, as I feel this drives the issue underground and does nothing to teach young people the responsible use of technology.

However, more recently, my staff are having to deal with a growing number of students who are distracted by their phone during the school day, despite being clear about when and where they can use it. If you add to this issue the very real and prevalent issue of online sexual harassment and online sexual abuse, I feel very strongly that is it time to re-evaluate the role of mobile phones in schools.

Over the next few weeks I will be seeking the views of parents and students on this issue and also looking in to workable solutions that will allow students the use of their phones for appropriate educational reasons and during their journeys to and from school.

Enjoy the weekend (and the sunshine) with your children.

Regards
Russell Stevens

The Black Curriculum

This week we took part in Black Lives Matter march, showing the community’s support for those who may have lost their lives due to racism, or those who have even just gone through it. We believe this is a very important thing to do - those who do not believe racism is that big in the UK are delusional. Just because it may not be shown in the media as much as it is in other countries doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.

Only 15 people showed up this time but the people who did show up are very involved in Black Lives Matter movement, and there are so many things you can learn from each and every person. These marches are slowly getting recognition; this is only the start of something big. Black History teaching within schools completely lacks the teaching of greatness within Black history. Many of us will learn about slavery, Malcom X, Martin Luther King but there is so much more to Black history than just a few names and one singular point in the timeline.

The importance of Black history is to show the covered secrets of our past and that many bad, biased and rumoured things you have learned are not completely true. So far, John Hanson School has created a group of 9 students who are on their way to becoming Black curriculum ambassadors for the school and hopefully, by year 10, are ready to deliver sessions to others. As a group, we have decided on a manifesto of what we want to achieve, and we are in the process of creating a noticeboard in the LRC promoting books by Black authors that are available; have completed research reports on how Black history has evolved and the impact it has on non-black persons; completed a case study on Black dance and it’s origins; and we are delivering an assembly for year 9 in a few weeks time.

Mr Chapman who is the head of history has developed the scheme of work for all 5 year groups to incorporate Black history. He has a plan to develop this even further at KS3 and do as much as he can with KS4; this is a fantastic start. As a school, we are activity trying to raise awareness regarding the importance of curriculum reform and its importance. There much more to do, but creating this group is a massive step into something great.

Music for students in Year 10 (current Year 9's) - next school year

We will be running a Music course for students in Years10 and 11 which will be an extra qualification if they choose to follow the course.

The sessions will run each week after school on Tuesdays between 3pm and 4.15 in PA1. Students attending the course will be expected to attend every week - treating it just like another lesson.

We did not have enough students to run it within the main options but we are able to run the course as mentioned above. Students will also be expected to work on the course in their own time too - rehearsing / completing homework etc.

Please let me know if your son/daughter would like to take the course (as described in the option booklet)

Motivational Album 2021, English as Additional Language students

What do you do to get motivated!
VISIT THE ALBUM HERE

Even the most positive of people sometimes face a situation where they lack motivation, so it`s  important to overcome this lack of enthusiasm and encourage our students to undertake frequent activities, take up new personal hobbies or even  develop  different skills, these are necessary as it will support positively their wellbeing. Taking  breaks and focusing on other life challenges  will help them relax  between school work, this can improve their personal goals and achievements as keeping motivated remains a big challenge.

With this in mind, few weeks ago students were encouraged to participate in this big challenge, to share their hobbies, skills  and experiences with us.

I am  very pleased to have received  so many images containing  a variety of  fantastic activities, some done at home, some with family members, other`s  whilst being out and about. I have carefully collated them and rearranged all pictures into our Motivational Album that I am very proud to share with you all.

Be well, keep safe

Community News
The Hawk Conservancy Trust would like to say a big thank you to Abigail for her non-uniform day idea and all those who got involved to help raise £874 for us!

It has been a tricky year for us, as it has been for so many others, but we have been bowled over with the support we have received, and most noticeably from the younger generations! It gives us so much hope for our future and the future of bird of prey conservation.

If you would like to help us further, please come and visit.  We’re consistently rated 5 stars on Trip Advisor and we’re really sure that you’ll have a brilliant day with us.  After such a long time of being stuck indoors, why not grab the chance to be in the fresh air, connecting with nature and supporting the work we do.

Tickets must be pre-booked.  Visit our website.
