Nuggets from our webinar in May

How to maintain strong cohesion among members of an intentional community

Terra Firma, Ottawa (from the Canadian Cohousing Network website)
Here are a few pearls of wisdom from the three panelists who participated in our May 18, 2021 webinar How a Supportive Community Promotes Wellbeing:

Mary-Kate Craig, founding member of Junction Village in Guelph, Ontario, underlined the importance of creating a space of flowing love, of having an anchor, particularly when facing difficult times. This could be achieved with group training such as a course on Non-violent communication or any other type of teaching the group believes would be helpful.

Dyan Wiley, founding member of Pioneer Valley Cohousing, in Amherst, Massachusetts, pointed out that her cohousing group participates in a yearly weekend retreat. On these occasions, they have social fun such as “no-talent shows", photo shares, etc. They also spend time on “big picture thinking", where the participants make use of effective communication strategies, such as gradually shifting from “me” to “we” statements.

Keith Shackleton, founding member of Terra Firma, a cohousing community in Ottawa, added that annual retreats with all members is also key to their cohesion as a group, allowing for play as well as ongoing clear communication. His closing statement to people wishing to establish a cohousing community was: “Hang in there, keep at it, be The Little Engine that Could ”.

An architect's perspective on the benefits of cohousing
