AUSTRALASIA NEWSLETTER

END THE INACTION

Hello <<First Name>>

In the past week, the number of passengers who have sailed internationally reached 550,000 since cruise operations resumed last year – yet another important milestone for our industry.

Frustratingly, none of these passengers has sailed from Australia or New Zealand and our region is now the only major cruise market in the world where governments have made no progress towards resumption.

Last week’s announcement that Australia’s cruise suspension has been extended for another three months was not unexpected given the government’s warning that travel restrictions are likely to remain into next year.  But the absence of any announcement on plans for the future – and the failure to commit to a framework for cruising’s resumption – is a further blow to our industry after months of discussions in good faith.

Recent public comments by Federal Tourism Minister Dan Tehan in support of cruising have been encouraging and reflect the campaigning our sector has been doing alongside that of the wider travel and tourism industry. However, it would be good to see these words translate into a concrete plan, without which 18,000 jobs are in doubt.

CLIA has voiced its alarm at the lack of progress in Australia and is calling on state and federal governments to take real steps forward. We have had further discussions with governments in the past week and will continue to engage persistently as we work to secure a solution. Similarly in New Zealand, the important discussions we have had with the government recently will continue as we push to overcome a lack of political progress.

Our industry’s new health measures are already in place and working successfully in other countries. It’s now time to break the cycle of inaction in Australia and New Zealand and work towards achieving this in our region too.

Stay Safe,

Joel Katz
Managing Director, CLIA Australasia

COVID-19 UPDATE

The world’s biggest cruise destination has taken a major step towards recovery in the past week as the first passengers set sail in the Caribbean. Travelling aboard Celebrity Millennium on a round-trip from St Maarten, the cruise is the first in a succession of resumptions planned over coming months.

At the same time, cruise lines have announced further resumption plans in the United States where authorities have approved sailings under strict new health protocols for over a dozen ships. Initial cruises are scheduled to begin this month, while others are planned to commence in July and August to destinations including the Caribbean, Mexico and Alaska.

This progress follows other recent successes internationally including the resumption of cruises in the UK, other parts of Europe and in parts of Asia.

Worldwide, more than 550,000 passengers have already set sail since July 2020 in countries where carefully controlled cruise operations have resumed. These sailings have allowed cruise lines to put new COVID-19 health protocols through practical tests, giving further valuable insight as the industry works to uphold health and safety.

CLIA and cruise lines continue to lobby for a pathway towards resumption in Australia and New Zealand, with strict health protocols supporting domestic-only operations while international borders remain closed.
