Stormy Weather

With more rain already fallen at this time of the year than the last few, it is worth revisiting personal and group safety when storms are around. There is a simple rule to remember.

The below information has been taken from the DLGSCI Weather Policy.

The department has a lightning safety plan. This plan is designed to ensure safety of clients and staff during thunderstorm activity.

The rule for assessing the risk is known as the 30/30 rule. For every three second delay between a lightning flash and audible thunder associated with the flash equates to a distance of approximately one kilometre.

When lightning is within 10km, therefore 30 seconds between the ‘flash and bang', it is recognised as an approaching risk and the camp should prepare to move people to safe areas.

All people should be within safe areas when the lightning is within 5km, therefore 15 seconds between ‘flash and bang'.

Events may cease up to 30 minutes after the last lighting or thunder event before re-commencing.

We realise this is a weekday, many are working, or studying/exams. However, if you are able to help, PLEASE let us know by registering on the sheet below. We need to know who can help in advance, so please put your name down early. If you're unsure this far in advance, but may be available, please indicate.

Many roles can be developed with training prior to race day. THANKS from all the older sprint folk. Sprint Technical Committee

WA Slalom Community

Calling the WA Slalom Community to welcome Mike Druce at the end of his Bibbulmun Track Trek in Kalamunda

When: Thursday 17th June 4pm - 4.45pm
Where: Northern Terminus Bibbulmun Track Kalamunda - Opposite Coles carpark
Why: Mike Druce has walked the entire Bibbulmun Track to raise funds for the charity ‘Derek’s Place’

Derek’s Place is a charity that has been formed to raise money for an accommodation facility for families with young children, when one of the parents is undergoing cancer treatment.

Natasha Welsh founded the charity after their personal experience. When her husband was undergoing treatment and their children were young it was difficult keeping the family together. Existing facilities weren’t able to cater for families with young children.

Mike Druce has been involved with the development of canoe slalom for many years and has shown the same selfless and dedicated attitude to push himself to the limit undertaking this walk as he does within the slalom community.

Please join Mike and share in the celebrations as he reaches the end of the Bibbulmun Track.

Looking to buy a K4? Register your Interest Now!

AKC has purchased a Nelo Quattro K4 which is more comfortable and adaptable to paddlers of different sizes than our current Vadja models.

We have to move one of the Vadja's on before we bring the new one into the shed and would like to call for expressions of interest from members who would be interested in purchasing a K4 for their personal boat fleet.

If you are interested in purchasing a Vadja K4 please email Kylie akcadministration@gmail.com with your bid

AKC Juniors - Reminder PFD's

A reminder for AKC U14 juniors that the wearing of PFD's is mandatory when using club boats and participating in club sessions.

Whilst a junior has the option to wear a PFD when 14 and older it's recommended to continue to wear one, particularly when participating in junior sessions.

If nothing else it is very handy to have if you have to ever rescue a younger paddler in the event of a capsize.

AKC Paracanoe Program

This new programme has been selected to be one of 15 selected storytellers for the Filming Our Future: Our Choice, Our Voice, Our Way’.

Carers WA selected 15 community members, sporting and physical activity clubs and/or community groups who have a disability or deliver a disability sport programme and are willing to share their stories of how they contribute to their communities. A short 2-3 minute video will be produced telling the story of the sporting inclusion.

A fantastic opportunity to showcase club based paracanoe programmes and what can be possible when we have so many dedicated volunteers.
