CHUMASH

Parshas Chukas - Shlishi with Rashi

Moshe and Aharon hit the rock to give water to the Yidden. Hashem told them that because of this, they will need to stay in the Midbar and not go into Eretz Yisroel.

Even though the Yidden didn’t ask nicely for water after Miriam passed away, Hashem still wanted to give them water.

Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu to take his stick and bring all of the Yidden to see. He should talk to the rock where Miriam’s well used to come from. Then it will give water again, in MOSHE’S zechus.

Moshe and Aharon got all of the Yidden together. It was a neis that everyone was able to see!

But they had a problem — they couldn’t find the rock where Miriam’s well used to be from! It had gotten mixed up with other rocks. The Yidden said, “We don’t care which rock you get water from!” But Moshe was upset at them — “Do you think we can get water from a rock that Hashem didn’t ask us to get water from?”

To show them, he spoke to one of the rocks like Hashem said — and it didn’t give any water, because it wasn’t the right one. Moshe and Aharon thought that maybe they need to hit it — since the first well the Yidden had in the Midbar came from a rock that Moshe hit.

By Hashgacha Protis, Moshe hit the RIGHT rock, instead of the one he spoke to before! But since he was supposed to TALK to the rock, it only gave out a little bit of water. So Moshe hit it again, and the water came out. Now the Yidden had water to drink for themselves and for their animals. This well stayed with the Yidden until Moshe passed away.

Hashem was upset with Moshe and Aharon, because they could have made a big Kiddush Hashem! All of the Yidden would see how even a ROCK listens to Hashem. But since Moshe and Aharon didn’t talk to the rock, Hashem will need to punish them. Now they won’t be allowed to go into Eretz Yisroel.

This water got a name “Mei Merivah” (the water of argument), since the Yidden had argued with Hashem. Hashem punished the Yidden for this by not giving them the lands of Amon, Moav, and Edom now — they will have to wait until Moshiach comes.

Chassidus explains that hitting the rock was not the MAIN REASON why Moshe shouldn’t go into Eretz Yisroel — it was like an excuse. Really, the main reason is because Moshe Rabbeinu was the Rebbe of the Yidden in the Midbar. Even though Moshe Rabbeinu was ready to go into Eretz Yisroel, since his nation had to stay in the Midbar, Hashem wanted him to stay with them — until the time of the Geulah, when Moshe Rabbeinu will bring these Yidden with him into Eretz Yisroel!

TEHILLIM

29 - 34

Today’s shiur Tehillim is kapitelach Chof-Tes to Lamed-Daled.

The Frierdiker Rebbe told this story:

Once when the Mitteler Rebbe was 7 or 8, he davened for a longer time than usual — he davenedba’arichus.” After he finished davening, someone asked him what took him so long! The Mitteler Rebbe answered that he stopped to think about something that is says in davening, and that made it take a long time.

Which part? It was a posuk from today’s TehillimKapitel Lamed (30:3)! (We say this kapitel every day before Boruch She’amar.) “Hashem Elokai, Shivati Eilecha Vatirpa’eini” — “I cried out to You, Hashem and You made me feel better!”

The Mitteler Rebbe was thinking about the word “Vatirpa’eini” (“and You healed me”). He was thinking how that word is like the word “rifyon” — making something weaker. He thought that the posuk could mean “I cried out to You, Hashem, and You made my Yetzer Hara not as strong!” He was thinking about how Hashem helps us win over our Yetzer Hara!

Very soon, when Moshiach comes, Hashem will take away our Yetzer Hara completely! We will have won the fight with the Yetzer Hara!

Until then, Hashem helps us make it weaker so we will act the way Hashem wants us to.

TANYA

Shaar Hayichud Veha'emunah Perek Yud-Beis

Today we learn the details about how Hashem created everything using the osios of the Alef-Beis.

If you have a box of Legos and wanted to make a house, what would you call that house in Lashon Kodesh? Bayis! That’s beis, yud, sof. What about the box? That’s a “Teiva” — tof, yud, veis, hey.

But if they have three of the same letters, why are they such different things? Well, one of them has an extra letter, and they are in a different order!

Hashem made EVERYTHING in the world with letters. Hashem said “Yehi Rakia” — and there was a sky! Hashem used the letters reish, kuf, yud, ayin which became one word! Each letter has a special chayus, and when it is put together into a whole word, it gets the perfect chayus to make that thing.

When Hashem takes the same letters and makes a different word — like a vegetable (yerek) with yud, reish, kuf — then it gets a different chayus. It has many of the same letters, but in a different order, and it’s a different word. That’s why its chayus is different too, and it becomes a different thing in the world!

(Words that include a lot of things get a VERY strong chayus, like the sky. The different levels of the sky (Zvul, Machon, Shechakim...) don’t need as strong of a chayus. The Alter Rebbe also teaches us that the first letter of each word gives it more chayus than all of the other letters in the word.)

That’s how everything in the entire world was made with just 22 letters of the Alef-Beis. It might seem like SO many things — lakes and rocks and sky and sun and moon and stars and plants and fish and animals and people.... and so many of each kind of thing...

But it is ALL from one Hashem and the chayus He gives to everything with the 22 holy letters of the Alef-Beis!

HAYOM YOM

Hey Tammuz

Today in Hayom Yom, we learn the best way to have parnasa! When we do our job, Hashem will do His job!

A very close chossid of the Alter Rebbe once had Yechidus. He complained that he was having a very hard time with parnasa.

The Alter Rebbe answered him: “Hashem needs YOU to bring the light of Torah and Yiddishkeit to everyone around you. You need Hashem to give you parnasa. You do your job, and Hashem will do His!”

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #2 - Hakdama

Today’s Sefer Hamitzvos gives us the rules the Rambam used to decide which mitzvos are counted in the 613 mitzvos. (Besides for the Rambam, there are other Chachomim who count the mitzvos differently. Here the Rambam shows us why he counts the mitzvos specifically this way.)

In today’s Sefer Hamitzvos we will learn the first 4 rules of how to decide if something is counted as a mitzvah:

1) The mitzvos D’Rabbonon aren’t counted in the 613 mitzvos; it has to be in the pesukim of the Torah.

2) It has to be SAID in the Torah, not something we learn from a hint.

3) It has to be a mitzvah that is ALWAYS a mitzvah (so a mitzvah about the Mishkan that we don’t keep in the Beis Hamikdash isn’t counted)

4) We only count mitzvos that are said in a specific way, not things like “do everything Hashem tells you to.”

The details of the 14 rules the Rambam uses to count the mitzvos are very long. The Rambam gives many proofs and examples to explain each of the rules! In the Moreh Shiur, it says that they can be learned over time, even after we already start learning the actual mitzvos. (We divided them up by learning 4 rules today, and 5 tomorrow and the next day.)

RAMBAM

Mitzvos Asei

In Rambam, we are counting the mitzvos! Today we say a list of all 248 Mitzvos Asei (those are the mitzvos that are about something we need to DO for Hashem — the mitzvos Lo Saasei are the things Hashem asks us NOT to do).

Did you know what the Rambam says is the very first mitzvah? To know that there is a Hashem! That’s a mitzvah that you can do all the time!

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Nezirus - Perek Daled

At the end of being a Nazir, the Nazir needs to shave all of his hair and bring certain korbanos. But what if he made a promise to be a Nazir more than one time in a row? The Rambam answers this question too!

INYANA D'YOMA

Stories the Rebbe Told Us

Once a Shliach went to teach a Yid about Yiddishkeit. He made an appointment to visit the man’s office. This man was a professor, who was very smart and not easy to speak to!

The Shliach started talking to him about Yiddishkeit, and the professor argued with him. The professor went to get a book to try to show the Shliach that he is right, and when he came back he saw that the Shliach is standing near the wall and shaking back and forth!

After he finished, the Shliach told the professor that he was davening Mincha before it got too late.

The professor was so impressed that even though this was an important appointment, when the Shliach had to talk to Hashem, he stopped right away to daven!

This professor became a Baal Teshuva and helped many other Yidden come closer to Yiddishkeit too!

The Rebbe told us that we should learn from here that even though manners are important, when we tell a Yid right away that we want Moshiach now, this will get his neshama excited! He sees that a regular person comes to him, and he’s thinking about Moshiach!

TEFILLAH

Hinei Mitaso and Yevarechecha

One of the main reasons we say Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah is for protection from the kochos of kelipah that are stronger at night.

After saying Shema and the pesukim that teach us to say it (Yaalzu), we say two pesukim that are about protection from bad dreams.

The posukHinei Mitaso SheliShlomo” comes from Shir Hashirim. It speaks about the bed of Shlomo Hamelech, which had sixty strong men standing around it. Each of these men held a sword and was ready for war, in case of anything scary at night.

The Medrash says that these strong men are actually a mashal. Shlomo Hamelech had the words of Birchas Kohanim written on his bed. These 60 letters were like strong soldiers which protected him from bad dreams. Then we actually say the words of Birchas Kohanim.

(Birchas Kohanim is a powerful protection against not good dreams. We also say a special tefillah about dreams when we hear Birchas Kohanim in shul on Yom Tov!)

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Hashem Elokeichem Emes

There are a few different nuscha’os of how much of Shema we should say in Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah. We follow the minhag that the Alter Rebbe brings in the siddur, of saying all three paragraphs of ShemaShema, Vehaya, and Vayomer.

If you add up the words from all of these paragraphs, you will see that there are exactly 245 words. We add an extra 3 words to make a total of 248 words. This way, we can have in mind that each word of Shema should bring a refuah to one of the 248 parts of a person’s body.

We add the three words by repeating the last words of Shema, “Ani Hashem Elokeichem, Ani Hashem Elokeichem,” “I am Hashem Your Aibershter.” We then finish off with the word “Emes,” true.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

The Guf is Special!

During Golus, we don’t look at our guf as something so special B’Ruchnius. We see that the guf makes all kinds of problems in our Avodas Hashem! It has taavos, it gets too tired to do mitzvos, and it distracts us in the middle of davening and learning.

But when Moshiach comes, those things won’t bother us anymore.

Then, we’ll be able to see and appreciate how special and precious a Yiddishe guf is!
