William Britain has been elected Chair of the Highgate Society. William has been Treasurer for several years. He succeeds Elspeth Clements who stepped down after three years in office.
Shepherd’s Cottage is a hidden treasure in Highgate. Built in the 17th Century, it is tucked away in the Village Backlands. The Cottage and its historic setting are threatened by a proposed development which will block heritage views and emergency or repairs access. The local community have come together to challenge these plans and to preserve the cottage in its setting for future generations. Join the owner Jane Hill to hear about her cottage’s history & see the antiques she has for sale.
Saturday coffee mornings to resume
Highgate Society Saturday Morning Coffee and Conversations starts again on Saturday 24th July at 10.30 -12.30.

Modern Homes

150th anniversary of the Hampstead Heath Act
A full year-long programme of community celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the Hampstead Heath Act has been unveiled by the City Corporation. A highlight of the programme includes an outdoor exhibition which was launched on the Heath on 23 June to showcase the site’s history and the significance of the 1871 Act. As well as thinking unkind thoughts about the irresponsible picnic groups (which of us hasn’t?), the Infrastructure and Projects Group (in consultation with Corporation of London) is planning several tidy up events on the Heath. With the reopening soon of our newly refurbished hall at 10A South Grove, we are looking for volunteers for a number of roles to help bring the hall back as a centre of Highgate life.
