2021 Sibiu Cycling Tour - Stage 3 Preview
Last but not least, the fast sprinters will come to the fore in the Sibiu Cycling Tour - or can a breakaway spoil the party this afternoon, and contest the victory on Sibiu's Piața Mare?
The parcours
The final stage 3 in the afternoon of Tuesday, 6 July, starts and finishes on the Piața Mare in the centre of Sibiu, and includes five mountains sprints, all category C, and three intermediate sprints on its 205.3 km. The real start will be just north of Sibiu, and the climb of Șura Mare followed by another unclassified climb is an immediate first springboard for attacks. After two hard stages in the mountains and a likely tired peloton, it could be a good opportunity for a strong breakaway to go clear.
Ruși hosts the first intermediate sprint of the day, before the peloton on mainly flat roads passes through a.o. Șeica Mare, Copșa Mică, Mediaș, Jidvei and Blaj, for another category C climb and two more sprints. Former white jersey Daniel Turek (Team Felbermayr Simplon Wels) has been in the breakaway both days so far, and if he can manage to do so again today, those climbs to Cergău Mare and Vingard could offer another opportunity to fight back in the Sibiu Cycling Tour mountain competition.
The last classified climb of the stage starts after Apoldu de Sus, cresting 26.8 km to go, before heading back to Sibiu for this finish of the race. This last part of the stage is not particularly difficult, with its mostly large, slightly descending roads favouring the sprinters' trains, but the final kilometre may spring a surprise: After a right turn with 550 metres to go, the road surface turns to cobbles on the narrow, twisty roads of Sibiu's old town, and continually climb at three percent to the finish on the Piața Mare, where the winner of the 2021 Sibiu Cycling Tour will be crowned.
