🛥️ Some ferry good news for PDX

Plus: The mayor wants you to stop yelling at him in restaurants.

By Cassie Ruud

It’s Tuesday.

Everyone have a fun weekend? Cool beans, and glad to hear it.

Did you know that at the end of this week, two of our largest and busiest vaccination sites will be shutting down? The Oregon Convention Center and the Red Lot at the airport are wrapping things up this Saturday, June 19. With more and more Oregonians getting vaccinated, the need for these sites to continue operating has dwindled in turn.

Wanna know what a day in the life of a vaccine volunteer looks like before these spots close up shop? Take a peep at our interview with volunteer Nick S., which you can read right here.

Also, today our Bridgeliner Unabridged members are kicking off this week’s I Spy — Bridgeliner Bragging Rights™️ are on the line. Wanna join the fun? Become a member today.

Without further ado...

3 things to know

🙅 Mayor Ted Wheeler wants people to stop shouting at him when he’s out eating. According to a recent interview with Willamette Week, Wheeler has had it with people grilling him while he’s dining at restaurants. Portlanders have confronted the mayor on multiple occasions this year: One encounter ended with Wheeler pepper-spraying a man who’d followed him back to his car. Just a week ago, he was confronted once again at Bamboo Sushi. Wheeler said that while he now anticipates being on the receiving end of harsh words when he’s out, he doesn’t necessarily accept it. The mayor — who also happens to be the police commissioner — has faced criticism for his handling of protests over the last year and the use of force on demonstrators by Portland’s police. 🏘️ Workers who assist unhoused Portlanders are also facing houselessness themselves.  Social workers who provide mental health care to these communities say low wages — which can start for some local nonprofits at $15 an hour — are causing a struggle to afford shelter. From OregonLive, “At JOIN, a Portland homelessness nonprofit that recently hiked its minimum wage to $22.60 an hour, there have been reports of employees needing to get food boxes because they couldn’t afford to eat some weeks and, according to Katrina Holland, director of JOIN, one former staff member ended up homeless.” (OregonLive / National Low Income Housing Coalition)

🔍 A newly passed state bill will make it easier to identify Portland police officers at protests. The legislation was prompted in part by law enforcement officer’s practice of hiding their names when patrolling protests, opting to display numbers instead. This was widely observed during the demonstrations of the last year, and has made identifying officers accused of using excessive use of force an uphill battle for organizations like the ACLU. Bill 3355 will allow members of the public to request an officer’s identity if they can provide specific forms of evidence to the city of Portland. (Willamette Week / Oregon Legislature)

3 things to make you smile

🛥️ Finally, some ferry good news. Next summer you’ll be able to catch the Frog Ferry from Downtown up to St. Johns instead of having to commute through snarls of gridlocked traffic. A one-way trip will last about 25-ish minutes, and fetch you $3 per voyage. The pilot program aims to launch early next summer and run through 2024. (KGW)

🐻 Here’s how to get your very own Ruxpin: Step one, adopt him. This little teddy bear of a cat is a white-and-brown tabby, and just a little over 12-years-old. Ruxpin loves him some chin and cheek scratches, he’s a sucker for an empty lap, and he lived with a dog in his previous home. This cool kitty does have a few special needs when it comes to fear and anxiety as well as being introduced to new animals and people — but if you’ve got a calm and low-traffic home, this grade A snuggler might be for you. 🎬 Calling all Twilight fans. The McLoughlin Promenade in Oregon City is finally getting recognized for its appearance in the late aughts fantasy-romance blockbusters. The Promenade appears in the movie as the fictitious Grisham Mill. A placard denoting the honor was placed by the Oregon Film Trail earlier in May, and is the 27th such sign honoring the state’s place in cinematic history. (Editor’s note: Pssst, if you’re a fan of Ken Kesey, you can find a couple more of these signs on the Central Oregon Coast talking about “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Sometimes a Great Notion.” Happy hunting!) 📺 Are you still watching?

These days, we all pay for subscriptions — everything from razors to “ugly” produce to cat toys. We pay for Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Quip, HelloFresh, Winc, and so much more.

But when it comes to paying for news, it seems that’s non-negotiable for folks. Sure, this newsletter doesn’t arrive in a cute Birchbox package every month (wouldn’t that be interesting). But if you see value in the digital package you receive every morning (and you’ve told us you do!), we hope you’ll become a Bridgeliner Unabridged member

🙋 One more thing …

Thank you for reading all the way to the end.

Where are all my single Portland dads at? Did you know that according to this website LawnStarter (Editor’s note: Look, we get weird emails, it’s a thing), you’re living in the fourth best city for single dads? The second and third slots go to Salem and Eugene, respectively.

What was the criteria for determining the best cities for single dads? “Affordable housing and child care, world-class hospitals and schools, and strong public programs are among the most important factors,” per LawnStarter.

So what do you think, single dads of Bridgeliner? Would you put our city this high on the list? Lower? Hit reply to this email and let me know so I can share with your fellow readers.

That’s all for today folks, catch you back here tomorrow.

Virtual hugs 🤗,

-Cassie at Bridgeliner
