The 2021 NAIDOC theme – HEAL COUNTRY! Calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. A country that is more than a place and inherent to our identity.
The 2021 NAIDOC Awards recognise the outstanding contributions that Indigenous Australians make to improve the lives of Indigenous people in their communities and beyond, to promote Indigenous issues in the wider community, or the excellence they’ve shown in their chosen field.

We proudly highlight our winners, we learn of their journey, their inspirational story and we pay tribute to their achievements. Their work enriches our communities, our people and this nation.
Now is the time to pay tribute to the special people in our community who have gone above and beyond to help improve the lives of others and contribute to a diverse, friendly and strong community.

This special person could be your neighbor, a friend or someone you have come across through your local school, or sporting group. Whoever comes to mind, they are someone who works selflessly to help improve your life and the lives of others.

The efforts of these quiet achievers can often go unnoticed in our busy lives. The NAIDOC Awards are about taking the time to ensure these individuals are honoured and receive the recognition they deserve.

Submit your nomination for the person that you believe has made an outstanding contribution to the Walgett Shire community and tell us why you think they are deserving of an NAIDOC Award. The nominee must be of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent.

NAIDOC Awards categories are as follows:

Why do I want to be a councillor?
Councillors are elected by their local community to represent community views on council, provide leadership and make sure local needs are met. They do this by directing a council’s affairs, allocating resources for the benefit of the local area, developing policies and reviewing the council’s performance in relation to delivering services and other matters. A councillor’s role is important. The decisions a councillor makes and the services provided by councils can impact on our lives, our local community and our local environment. Being a councillor can be rewarding because it provides an opportunity to: – make decisions that help people within the local community – influence the long-term, strategic direction of a local community – learn new skills such as public speaking and advocacy – work with a diverse range of people on a wide range of issues. Being a councillor can also be challenging as councils need to: – balance community needs and priorities, some of which are at odds with each other – work within a limited budget and a complex set of laws. Inevitably some decisions a

Where possible, we will also be aiming to bring a supply of baits but we need to work with the DPI to make sure they are legal and appropriate in NSW.
A reminder that, during this difficult time, Rural Aid also has their team of Counsellors available for a chat.  This is a service available to all of our registered farmers. Call 1300 327 624 and one of our friendly counsellors will give you a call. Or if you aren’t able to call at the moment, send an email to contact@ruralaid.org.au and we can have someone contact you.

We are asking you, what do you need?  If it is possible, we will do our best to help where and when we can.

Kind Regards
Sharon Novak | Disaster Assistance Coordinator

The mouse plague in regional NSW continues to infest the state and spread, impacting food businesses across many LGAs throughout NSW as it enters its eighth month, with the potential for the food chain to be impacted.  A range of resources and educative materials are available to assist both councils with their food safety inspections and food businesses compliance with the Food Safety Standards. These include:

The NSW Food Authority Website under the Resources section, has numerous factsheets and guidelines to assist food businesses including those on pest control, protecting food from contamination, chemical sanitisers, cleaning and sanitising etc and are available here https://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/resource-centre/factsheets-guides-and-policies

Further information on the NSW Governments regional recovery programs to help farmers, small businesses and households manage the mouse plague in regional NSW can be found here https://www.nsw.gov.au/initiative/mouse-control-support-program
