National Volunteers Week
17-23 May 2021

A morning tea to thank Torquay volunteers was held during National Volunteers Week. Fiona Bramham, Torquay Community House and Cr Kate Gazzard thanked the volunteers for their tireless work over the past year. Everyone including Cr Hodge, Cr Barker, Cr Gazzard enjoyed a lovely morning tea provided by Surfcoast Shire.
An update from the Danawa Community Garden

We have planned a Winter Solstice Pizza day for members next weekend, we'd like to say thank you to the Surfcoast Shire green teams for slashing and mowing our long wet grass, and also to Bunnings for assisting us to purchase a brand new mower. Our winter fundraiser was doing duty at the Anglesea Tip Shop, which was great fun and raised good funds for our ongoing maintenance bills.

Let’s Talk Trash: Recycling Batteries!
Did you know that approximately 70% of batteries sold each year in Australia are single-use batteries, and that most of them end up in landfill?

E-waste (as it’s commonly known), is growing three times faster than general waste in Australia, according to Sustainability Victoria, and the rapid rise is largely due to the increasing popularity of mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices that have become everyday household items.

For example more than a million mobile phones thrown away in Australia every year! When these are recycled, 95% of the components of a battery can be turned into new batteries or used in other industries.

Which Batteries Can Be Recycled?

Most household batteries under 5kg can be dropped of and these include batteries used for household appliances and personal devices such as:

  • cordless phones
  • cordless power tools
  • digital cameras
  • hearing aids
  • laptop computers
  • mobile phones
  • palm pilots
  • portable disc players
  • portable electric shavers
  • portable video games
  • remote controlled toys
  • video cameras

Where Can You Recycle Batteries in Torquay?

Household batteries can easily be recycled at no cost by dropping them off at one of our permanent drop off sites in Torquay:
  • Coles Torquay Village
