Don't let that cute, dog-like appearance fool you. The fennec fox is a tough little animal.

This small canid lives in the deserts of northern Africa and can survive for months without drinking water. Highly efficient kidneys extract every ounce of water from its food. Fennec foxes eat insects, small reptiles and birds, eggs, fruits and root vegetables. Even scorpions. Like we said, tough!

Fennec fox sits on hindquarters

Long hairs inside the fennec fox's exceptionally large ears help detect prey moving underground.

These foxes spend most daytime hours resting in dens but are capable of running on hot, loose sand, thanks to the fur on the bottoms of their feet.

Furry adaptations cover this desert dweller from head to toe!
