Tasmanian response: New edition of Tasvax Bulletin 

The Tasmanian Government issued a new edition of its Tasvax bulletin on 11 June, including information about vaccine eligibility, the state's total delivered dose count, and more.

National response: Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome update 

Professor Paul Kelly has written to those participating in the COVID-19 vaccination program to provide an update on possible symptoms and diagnosis of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome related to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

National response: General practice vaccine rollout update 

The Australian Government provided an update on the general practice vaccine rollout on 11 June, including information on the targeted expression of interest to general practice to deliver AstraZeneca vaccine and Pfizer vaccine.

National response: PPE guidance document for health workers 

The National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce Infection Prevention and Control Panel has developed a guidance document for the use of personal protective equipment for health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

National response: Flag-fall for vaccine suitability assessment services 

The Australian Government has introduced MBS item 90005 to provide a 'flag-fall' fee to GPs and other medical practitioners who conduct a COVID-19 vaccine suitability assessment service in a residential aged care facility, residential disability facility setting or at a patient's place of residence.

National response: Pfizer vaccine for pregnant and breastfeeding women 

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) advise that pregnant and breastfeeding women should now routinely be offered the Pfizer vaccine.

Changes to Closing the Gap PBS co-payment program 

From 1 July, changes will come into effect for the Closing the Gap Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) co-payment program, which was established in July 2010 to improve access to affordable PBS medicines for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with, or at risk of, chronic disease.

The Australian Government has created a fact sheet (for consumers and prescribers) and an FAQ document to summarise these changes.

New information sheet on palliative care and dementia

Palliative Care Tasmania has developed an information sheet, as a part of a project funded by Primary Health Tasmania, for those living with dementia and their loved ones.

The sheet aims to introduce:

  • palliative care
  • advance care planning
  • advance care directives and the associated advantages.
Updated osteoporosis position statement

Healthy Bones Australia (formerly Osteoporosis Australia) has updated its position statement on the management of osteoporosis. This is a concise education resource developed by leading Australian clinical experts to provide clear guidance on the identification, investigation, and treatment of people at risk of osteoporosis and related fractures.

Heart Foundation templates available on MyGPMPtool app

Two Heart Foundation templates — Heart Health Check Risk Assessment and My Healthy Heart Plan — are now available on the MyGPMPtool app.

Access is free for all general practices using the Topbar clinical support platform or the browser-based version.

Nominations open for RACGP Awards

Nominations for the 2021 RACGP Awards are now open and will close on Monday 19 July.

Learning modules for aged care nurses new to palliative care

palliAGED the palliative care evidence and practice information resource for the Australian aged care sector has released learning modules for aged care nurses who are new to palliative care.

The free-to-use modules provide a gateway to training and understanding in palliative care, including symptoms and care issues.

Kidney failure webinar 
Kidney Health Australia will host a health professional webinar about decision-making and symptom control for kidney failure on Tuesday 22 June at 7.30pm.
 COVID-19 epidemiology and testing update webinar 
In collaboration with Public Health Services, Primary Health Tasmania will host a webinar on Wednesday 23 June from 6.30pm to 8.00pm to provide information regarding the epidemiology of COVID-19 and why testing continues to be so important.
Fourth palliative care education webinar
The fourth palliative care education webinar will be held on Thursday 24 June from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

The webinar will explore communication skills in palliative care and be presented by Dr Robyn Thomas, Head of Department, Palliative Medicine, Royal Hobart Hospital.

Everyone who registers for this webinar will receive a recording afterwards.

 
 Cardiac Community Network - The Education Interface Program – webinar series 
The Cardiac Community Network has presented the Education Interface Program, supported by Primary Health Tasmania in partnership with the General Practice Liaison Officers, since November.

Chronic pain study to inform training programs
Researchers at Curtin University are running a survey to develop a shared understanding amongst people living with chronic pain (defined in the study as pain that lasts or recurs for more than three months), carers and health professionals of the main priorities for pain care.

These pain care priorities will help inform pain training programs for health professionals to better support the care of Australians living with chronic pain.
