CCFSA Strategic Vision and Work Plan
Amid the Coronavirus 2019 Pandemic (COVID-19) and in the absence of partner meetings, the CCFSA Leadership Council worked with a facilitator to articulate a strategic vision and work plan for 2021-2022, building upon objectives defined when the CCFSA was formed. Please join us on Monday, June 28th to learn more about this vision and contribute your voice.
The strategic vision identifies long range objectives for the CCFSA and implementation strategies for the next two years. The purpose and guiding principles of the CCFSA were also refined through this process to include challenging "mindsets and structural barriers to social equity with an emphasis on ending poverty and systemic racism."
To support the objectives of the CCFSA, the Leadership Council identified the following strategic focus areas:
- Networking and Collaboration: Serve as a convener to provide opportunities for members of the local food system to work together.
- Policy: Create broader understanding in the community and among policymakers of both favorable policies and those that disadvantage members of the local food system.
- Data and Assessment: Provide research and data to increase understanding of the local food system.
- Improving the Food System: Identify and foster targeted initiatives to address gaps, weaknesses or redundancies in the local food system.

We will share details related to these strategic focus areas during our upcoming partner meeting. The written work plan will be circulated after our partners have had the opportunity to comment.

Shippensburg Community Resource Coalition
|
|
|
Shippensburg Community Resource Coaliion (SCRC) has served the Shippensburg area by increasing access to social services, counseling services, and youth programs since 2010. Through partnerships with local organizations such as the Shippensburg Area School District
|
|
|
and Shippensburg University, SCRC works to connect clients with the resources they need including nutritional assistance. The SCRC's home is Katie's Place, which in addition to hosting the Thrift Shop of Katie's Place, is also where social services Tri County Community Action, Shippensburg Produce and Outreach, and Christ Among Neighbors are located.
Recently, the SCRC has been preparing for their Summer Learning Program, which began in 2012 as the area's first youth summer meals program. The SCRC partners with the School District to coordinate serving breakfast and lunch every weekday during the program. To help address the summer learning gap that some kids experience while also creating a fun association with learning, a book is chosen for each summer's theme- this year it's Hoot by Carl Hiaasen! Kids have fun with activities and field trips as well.

During the school year, the SCRC's Hound Packs program provides weekend and holiday meals for food insecure students in the Shippensburg Area School District. Pre-pandemic, the program served 110 students; 141 additional students have joined since the pandemic began. To meet this increased need, the program ran continuously from September 2019 through June 3rd, 2021. Enrollment was also opened to all students ages 18 and younger, rather than focusing on K-12 only. To increase accessibility, students were also able to self-enroll rather than relying on a reference from a school counselor,
The SCRC continues to provide the community with information and helps coordinate free community meals available Monday-Friday through partnerships with local church organizations.

Partner Profile: Shippensburg Produce and Outreach
Shippensburg Produce and Outreach (SPO) is an all-volunteer organization that began serving the community in 2008. SPO shares Katie's Place with the SCRC and other social services.The group focuses on connecting food-insecure individuals with nutritious, fresh food. Food is purchased or donated through the assistance of grant funds, private donors, and church organizations. Fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, and eggs are then prepared by volunteers and distributed weekly to approximately 150 individuals at Katie's Place, currently car-side for pandemic safety. An additional 60 community members receive food via delivery on a monthly basis, assisting those with conflicting work schedules or otherwise unable to travel to the distribution site. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SPO saw a 50% increase in food assistance need among clients.

SPO also acts as a hub connecting volunteers and community members with abundance from their own gardens to those in need. The "Grow a Row for SPO" initiative encourages community members to plant a little extra in their gardens for donation. Produce is also donated from the Shippensburg University Campus Farm when available, and the organization distributes Senior Boxes monthly to qualified seniors through the United States Department of Agriculture Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Through these combined efforts, approximately 3 tons of food are distributed on a weekly basis in addition to diapers and adult personal care products distributed once a month or as needed through site delivery. By directing excess fresh produce to food insecure individuals and encouraging community members to share what they cannot use, SPO helps to mitigate food waste and contribute to a more resilient local food system, while addressing food insecurity.
