If you don’t love a garden in June, will you ever love it?
Here in my USDA Hardiness Zone 6a garden in central Indiana, I’m pleased to have enjoyed a beautiful spring, so far. We’ve gotten just enough rain, and until a few days ago, the temperatures have been mostly mild. I realize it hasn’t been that way for many others.
I count my blessings and my flowers!
That includes the two lavenders pictured above. I wish I knew the varieties because they’ve been outstanding in a corner of my vegetable garden, asking for and receiving little care from me. I purchased them years ago as tiny little plants from Carolee’s Herb Farm at a local garden event. Carolee no longer sells plants but at one time had dozens of varieties of lavender so she knew which grew best in this area of the world.
Now let us ask the question we ask each month. Which flower owns the garden this month?
Is it roses?
It could be roses, if I had more than two or three of them in my garden.
Or is it clematis?
Clematis is making a strong showing in June.
Or maybe we should choose the lowly, much-loved dutch clover?
Perhaps it should be oakleaf hydranges?
Or maybe June belongs to the ditch lilies, Hemerocallis fulva, that grow along country lanes in early summer, and in a bed on the east side of my house.
Other contenders include hardy geraniums, like ‘Rozanne‘, though truthfully, most of the other varieties of hardy geranium I have are nearing the end of their big flush of bloom.
For purely sentimental reasons, I could also make a case for sweet peas owning June, but the only ones currently blooming are ‘Little Sweetheart’ which I grew in a container from seed from Botanical Interests. The sweet peas in the vegetable garden are just starting to think about blooming.
I would love for violas to own June, but I already gave them March, April, and May. And September and beyond.
I think June belongs to all these flowers and more, including these little pansies with sweet alyssum which have been blooming in this container since late March.
I hope they continue to hang on for the rest of the summer. I’ll do all I can to help them!
