The Finger Lakes is on its way to getting back to normal. This week Governor Cuomo announced Covid-19 restrictions were lifted as 70% of the state's adults have received their first vaccine dose. This is such a monumental achievement, since other countries and states are still facing many challenges. We hope you start enjoying local businesses again (if you haven't done so already). Please be respectful of individual company restrictions, if any.
This week's newsletter features updates from local businesses, life and wellness articles, including Tips to Beautify Your Backyard, How to Make the Most of the Longest Day (June 20th), and a new Peach and Prosciutto Pizza recipe. We also have local events including art, music, food and wine.
Make sure you visit our sponsors below and let them know you saw them on Finger Lakes Connected.
As a reminder, contact us if you'd like to advertise your business or event.
Cheers,
Don

New Vines Winery Celebrates 10 Years
newyorkwines.org
High school sweethearts and Rochester natives, Todd and Dani Eichas always dreamed of retiring to Finger Lakes wine country. As wine and gardening enthusiasts, the couple decided that dream would include growing grapes. The Eichases purchased land to build their bed and breakfast overlooking Seneca Lake in 2007 and that same year, Todd put his green thumb to work planting the first vines. New Vines Winery officially opened in 2011.
Now in its tenth year, New Vines Winery grows one acre of grapes and produces approximately 300 cases of Riesling, Gruner Veltliner, Lemberger, Cabernet Franc, and Marquette Rosé

This week's photo comes from Silver Thread Vineyard located on the east side of Seneca lake. "Donna and Louis Gridley farm a small planting of Riesling grapes high on the bluff of Keuka Lake (the piece of land that juts out between the two forks of the y-shaped lake). This site, planted in the early 2000s, is one of the highest elevations in the Finger Lakes and faces east-southeast for maximum sunlight interception. The vines sit in an entirely different layer of shale than we have on the east side of Seneca Lake, and the elevation accentuates vintage differences. In hot years like 2020, the Gridley Riesling is high alcohol and full bodied. In cool years, it is low alcohol and very delicate. Gridley Bluff Point Riesling is always the most original and unique member of our single-vineyard collection, stretching our understanding of what Riesling can be."

Here’s How to Make the Most of the Longest Day
The summer solstice, or midsummer, occurs when the sun hits its highest position in the sky, resulting in the greatest number of daylight hours at any point during the year. Sol in Latin means sun, while stitium means to stand still. It is believed that solstice describes the sun appearing to stand still in its daily path. Read more.
