Update from the Reopening Task Force

In response to the improved COVD-19 situation, the Reopening Task Force (RTF) has met weekly since the beginning of May to update Mount Carmel’s procedures for a return to more normal operations. We are sure you’re aware that in the CDC’s most recent announcement fully vaccinated persons no longer need to mask indoors. The CDC was also clear that state and local regulations take precedence. In our case, California is still maintaining its regulations that require:
  • Masking by all persons in public settings while indoors.  For terms of public health regulations, religious facilities are considered “public settings”.
  • Masking by unvaccinated persons unable to maintain physical distancing when outdoors, and
  • Masking by vaccinated persons who are in large outdoor groups.

In our deliberations on resuming in person worship and other church activities the Mt Carmel Lutheran Church Reopening Task Force we have been guided by some fundamental values:

1. Follow Public Health Guidelines (CDC, California, County and local public health guidelines and Synod recommendations) for all church activities.

2.Love of neighbor: following practices in our congregation life that prioritize concern for the most vulnerable among us: the elderly, those with immune deficiencies and children. This value is represented in the recommendation that even those who are fully vaccinated continue to mask and practice social distancing in our indoor worship.

3. Welcome all people: we seek to embody the value of inclusivity in our worship by not segregating people based upon their vaccination status. Our priority has been to promote importance of getting vaccinated for COVID-19 while recognizing that some people cannot be vaccinated and others—including children—may not yet be vaccinated. It is also for this reason that we will continue with our outdoor worship where masking is not required.

In light of these guidelines and values, we are recommending that indoor Worship resume on Sunday, June 6th at 9:30am. The worship will continue to be available online through zoom and, as noted above, our outdoor worship will continue at 12 noon.  Some of the specifics and adapted “how tos” of our indoor gatherings will include:

  • practice social distancing outdoors and during worship
  • remain masked during worship
  • socially-distanced seating in “family” groups,
  • communion using pre-packaged communion kits
  • offering plates at the rear of the church, orderly dismissal
  • coffee hour gathering outside

We recognize that these recommendations are a “work in progress” that will continue to evolve in light of changing conditions. We will have further updates on in person small group meetings, Vacation Bible School and other uses of our facility. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to being together soon.

The Reopening Task Force
Permits are expected to be issued soon with construction scheduled to begin the end of June. The first items on the list for the construction crew will be building the new driveway from Fredericks Street to the upper lot, and adding a perimeter fence for safety. The upper lot will be available for Mt. Carmel parking when needed.

We plan on keeping you fully updated throughout the process, so keep your eyes on the Vistas for news and photos.

Protect Your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card
Your vaccination record card has personal information that can put you at risk for identity theft. Make sure you protect your card and identity with these tips:

✔️ Do: Snap a picture of the card in case it gets lost or misplaced.
❌ Don't: Share a photo of your card online. Take a picture of your vaccine sticker or bandage instead.
✔️ Do: Keep your card stored in a safe place at home.
❌ Don't: Laminate your card. The heat may damage the card or cause the ink to be illegible.

Anyone who loses their vaccination record card should not print a fake one at home or buy a fake vaccination record card, as it is
against the law. Instead, request a new one by calling the County’s Phone Assistance Center at (805) 543-2444. Read the full news release here.
