In this edition, we look at the Brisbane City Council Budget delivered this week and what it means for residents in the Pullenvale Ward including the resumption of kerbside collection. Council this week also proposed some important amendments to its Local Laws. There’s been plenty happening out and about, and as always, if we can be of assistance with any Council related issue, please contact the Pullenvale Ward office during business hours on 07 3407 0220 or email Pullenvale.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au

2021/22 BUDGET

Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, promised Council’s 2021/22 Budget would be one for the suburbs and he has delivered.

About 86% of this year’s budget will be spent on infrastructure such as roads, footpaths, bikeways, and playgrounds in the suburbs.

I’m pleased to advise funding has been approved for a number of projects in the Pullenvale Ward that I advocated for during the past 12 months.

A detailed summary of projects and expenditure will be outlined in a newsletter to every resident in early July but for a quick summary,  click here

KERBSIDE COLLECTION

Kerbside collection will resume 12 months earlier than scheduled and the good news is that residents in the western part of the Ward will be among the first to have their unwanted items collected. The collection date for residents in Anstead, Bellbowrie, Chuwar, Karana Downs, Kholo, Lake Manchester, Moggill, Mount Crosby and Pinjarra Hills is 26th July.

IN COUNCIL

Following the delivery of the Schrinner Council Budget for 2021/22 on Wednesday, a number of information sessions and Budget debates are planned for next week before Council goes into its winter recess.

At the last regular Tuesday meeting this week before recess, Council introduced proposed amendments to the Health, Safety and Amenity Local Law. It addresses the problem of dumping shopping centre trolleys in the suburbs and littering, specifically advertising materials and other publications. This is something I have been concerned about locally for some time and I spoke in support of the proposed amendments. Click here to read my speech.

Earlier this month, I also spoke about the success of our two recent community days – A Day in May and Explore 4070. Click here to read my speech .

MOGGILL VILLAGE OPENING

Moggill and Bellbowrie are the highest growth communities in the Pullenvale Ward and that is expected to be the case again for the next 20 years.

That was the thrust of my speech at the opening of the new Moggill Village Shopping Centre on Monday. Click here to read the media release I issued outlining the exciting time ahead for these communities .

Congratulations to Consolidated Properties and Hutchinson Builders for delivering an impressive and modern facility with such an extensive array of services under the one roof.

OUT AND ABOUT

Brookfield was abuzz on a cold Saturday June morning where more than 2,600 participants from across south-east Queensland took part in the annual Kokoda Challenge.  The Federal Member for Ryan, Julian Simmonds, State Member for Moggill, Dr. Christian Rowan and I were on hand to set them on their long trek through local bushlands. The challenge embraces the spirit of Kokoda - courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice - and raises valuable funds for the great programmes undertaken by the Kokoda Youth Foundation.
.....
It was an honour to represent the Lord Mayor at the Australian American Association’s 2021 Memorial Day service at Newstead Park. Memorial Day honours those who died in any war while serving with the United States. The US and Australia have been strong allies in many campaigns and the Schrinner Council is proud to be part of this annual service.
.....
It was another fantastic turnout for the Explore 4070 community day at Moggill Sports Park on Queensland Day. There were plenty of groups promoting the great work they do in the community, including Rotary, e-Waste Connection, the Queensland Police Service and the Karana Downs and Surrounds Community Garden Hub. Congratulations to Karana Bellbowrie Rotary Club President, Alannah Valentine and her team of volunteers who pulled the day together.
.....
The benefits of Brisbane Metro, one of the Schrinner administration’s signature projects, were outlined by Council’s Public and Active Transport Chair, Cr Ryan Murphy at Rotary Club of Kenmore, Australia's meeting earlier this month. A crowd of almost 50 local and visiting Rotarians were on hand for a very interesting presentation.
.....
It was a pleasure to be invited by St. Aiden’s Anglican Girls School to address the Year 6 class about the role of local government in our three tiered system. A number of girls live in the Pullenvale Ward and asked some pertinent questions about local initiatives and the Schrinner Council’s vision for the city.  I also used our LNP Schrinner Council team (which is 50% female and 50% male) as an example of what they can achieve in life by setting their sights high.
.....
Congratulations to Dale and her team and the Moggill Creek Catchment Group’s annual Kids Day last Sunday. There was plenty of hands-on activities to help children learn about and appreciated Australian native wildlife and our environment. The Schrinner Council was again proud to be a sponsor of this event.

AND FINALLY…

Fran Alt is a legend in the Bellbowrie /Moggill community. So it was sad to learn she has decided to close her popular bakery at the Bellbowrie Shopping Centre this month. Fran has owned and operated the bakery through good times and tough for the past 29 years. One million loaves of bread later, Fran is turning off the ovens and plans to spend more time pursuing other interests. Judging by the number of comments and likes to a social media post I did last week about Fran, the community is going to miss her very much. I’m sure I speak for everyone in wishing her good health and happiness in the future.
